Default Best engine at altitude

Curious for those that live at altitude which engine you prefer 5.0 or EB? I mainly drive county roads averaging 35mph and when I infrequently tow it is just motocross bikes.

In higher altitudes engines with turbos generally perform better because the air is thinner and the turbos can push more air that a naturally aspired engines.

Turbo will loose less power at altitude because it "creates" it's own altitude. It does not rely on the atmospheric pressure to fill the cylinders, it makes it's own pressure.

Both will work great. The EB will just loose less power.

The average NA motor loses 3% of its power for every 1000' increase in altitude. The average FI motor loses much less than 1%. At 10,000% there will be a noticeable difference in performance between the two.

Where do you get your numbers? A properley sized turbo will not lose any power at elevations up to 14,000 ft they are 100% elevation compensating. And as for the NA FI engine they are able to control the mixture better than a carbed engine but the will still loose roughly 3% / 1000 ft bubbabud

My experience - I live in Denver at 5280'. We took a trip this summer to the mountains, not towing anything, but 4 people and all their gear, groceries, 2 coolers, and 4 bikes. Went from 5280 to 12000', very impressed with the Eco, never felt like it had any less power. My 02 would feel like a complete slug up at that altitude.

BTW - since people are always concerned about MPG, averaged 19.4 for the entire trip (800 miles).

I have the 5.0 and altitude makes a noticeable difference. I attend college in Utah where the elevation is 4500ft. When I am home in Wyoming the elevation is right at 8000ft. I can tell difference in how the truck performs in Utah vs Wyoming. In utah it has more pep and runs better. Its true the Turbo engine will perform better because its not relying on atmospheric pressure to feed the air into the combustion chamber. So in the end the eco will perform better, but the 5.0 will perform great also. Altitude will not make such a difference in the 5.0 that i would let it sway you from engine to engine. You'll be more than satisfied with either.

I recently took my 5.0L FX4 Supercab on a trip threw mountains of New Mexico and I honestly didn't notice much if any real drop in power...Even at the top of the Sierra Blanca mountain It still performed great.

I did notice a little power drop as the altitude increased, but it wasn't really enough of a drop to say I lost a ton of performance...The 5.0L's a stout engine as is the Ecoboost.

It is true though...The Ecoboost will see even less powerloss in the mountain range than the 5.0L due to the fact that the Ecoboost is Force fed.

Bubbubud, I think what he means by FI is forced induction, not fuel injected.

I stand corected but forced induction could also mean supercharged and thats a whole different game
