Default Anyone look under a 2011 Ecoboost?

I looked under my 2011 Ecoboost and found what I initially thought was a skid plate but discovered it is some sort of soft board type material. It covers the transmission and transfer case area. I can only guess it is some sort of sound damper? Anyone have any other/different idea(s)?

If it's not a skid plate, then it might be something to improve air-flow under the chassis; something designed to improving the economy numbers?

Just speculation.

Smoothing up the bottom of the truck might....just might....improve the air flow from that of a brick to that with a brick with a smoother bottom!!!!

LOL !!! I did go by the dealer today and showed/asked the service writer and he said he was not sure. Had to go by today as there were a couple of small fit/finish items they needed to adjust on the new ride, so left it with them. Service writer said he would find out and let me know when I pick it up. I can tell you, it is very light weight and would not appear to be durable enough to survive the first drag across something in 4X4. I asked the dealer if I got a new one as part of each oil change - he failed to see the humor.

Got truck back from the dealer and the service writer said it is sound dampening. Not sure he is completely correct, I think it is likely to improve airflow as well as to reduce noice, but ...............

it could be for sound damping that would result from smoothing the air flow. Ecoboost has a bit of an airflow difference from other models in the front end as a result of the intercooler and different bumper.
