Default 5.0 SCT preloaded 3015. $200?

I have an 11 Platinum with the 5.0 and I wanted to get an opinion on a SCT tuner. It comes with three pre-programmed tunes and a custom tune from MPT (the high HP tune). I don't plan on purchasing any tunes now (maybe ever...), and I just want something that would be good out of the box.

I am familiar with COBB canned tunes, and I am looking for something similar to that setup. Is this a deal I should jump on? I have searched, and I see plenty of great reviews for 5* and other custom tuners, but this one is just the SCT stuff, I assume.

Can you give me some advise on what to look at to make sure I am not getting tunes for larger tires, or something that wouldn't be applicable to me? I don't want to screw up my speedo on this either. Sorry for the uneducated question, and thank you for helping me out.

BTW, First Post! I've done a few mods from this forum, and I appreciate the help so far!

Hi & welcome.

My perspective: I'd never buy a canned device (used or otherwise ) if the aggregate cost of device + added custom calibrations even approaches the cost of a Brand New device WITH custom calibrations already included in that price. ( Hell - I'd never buy canned at any price - custom is just so much better and potentially safer - but that's just me, lol)

Example:

Baseline used canned device: $200 - generic tuning with unremarkable results, Zero CS. NO warranty. No datalogging. Legacy device.

Yer used X3 device $200 + 3 custom tunes emailed from MPT (@ 70/each) =$410. NO device warranty. Legacy device. Datalogging. Great result s otherwise. Great CS for the tuning only.

Brand-New X4 from MPT = $399 ( minus forum discount, included 3 custom tunes of yer choice ) = $399 or less. WITH a warranty, free datalogging review and spectacular results, and great CS. AND it is a much more advanced device.

BTW - you can't use that MPT custom tune - yer Strategy Code will almost certainly not match.

FWIW - things like tire size, gear ratios are user adjustable, prior to reflashing.

From where I sit, the choice is clear. It's not worth the savings.

Yer truck, yer money.

Sounds like great advice. I was antsy since it was cheap, and I want to change something. I would probably be better off with an intake for now to keep me satiated. I'll do some more research and ordering new sounds like a better buy.

Thanks!

Hi.

No worries. Please note that, unless yer just after some underhood bling and/or some added induction noise, a CAI won't net any gains worth it's cost on a 5.0. The stocker is that good. The custom programmer is a far better investment (and depending upon intake chosen aboot the same cost).

Example:

If/when yer ready to purchase, Call/email or PM them fer details on ye extra forum discount.

good luck
