Liability, heck! They make a lot of money off the mark-up on oil and filters. But my service rep is fine with me bringing my own and I let him know I appreciate it.
I've always changed my own oil until recently when I started to experience dizziness from laying on my back in closed quarters. I should update my living will to bury me face down so the world can kiss, uh, never mind.

When you consider the cost of labor as well as the cost of using the facilities as well as covering the cost of other fixed costs like insurance, even those $29.99 oil changes are an absolute bargain. They probably lose money on each oil change when considering all costs, but it is the cost of developing a customer base who they hope will bring in vehicles as they age past the warranty period.

When you think about it, even Motorcraft 5w20 semi synthetic costs $5.99 a quart at Walmart.

Exactly on point. I figured to change the oil myself with the same oil was around $42 for oil, $5 for the filter, and 30 minutes, plus driving somewhere to drop off the old oil, using $5 in gas. So $52 plus my time.

Ford does it for $34 at my dealer, and they rotate and fill the tires, fill the wiper fluid, check all the other fluid levels, etc.

Why wouldn't I let them do it?

Question

Motorcraft Synthetic Blend Motor Oil, 5W20, 5qt

is $17.97 for a 5qt jug here. Why buy it by the quart?

Since our 5.0's take about 8 quarts, you are going to have to buy some quarts in there.

I believe Motorcraft and Mobil 1 sell for almost the same up here in Alaska, so it is a no brainer to use Mobil 1 since you get a full synthetic.

That's why you buy multiple 5 quart jugs. You're saving a TON of money by having an extra 2 quarts sitting on the shelf to use 5k miles later.

I rotated the tires and while doing so I cleaned the inside of the wheel and the brake hat to ensure a clean mating of the two; to me it's important that things go back together cleanly and properly tightened.

There'll be a day when I'll have to go the dealer for oil changes and such but hopefully that's quite a way off.
Sounds like you need to sell me your truck in a few years. Not enough guys like you around

Well, lets see, 5 quarts is 17.99, one quart is 5.99

gotta have 8 quarts(7.7 I think is the correct #), by buying 3 extra quarts, you've already spend the same as you would have on another 5qt jug, and you've still got oil left for the next oil change.

Am i missing something math wise?

Agreed. I replied before I seen your comment, which is the same idea.

Maybe it is just me, but I hate having opened oil jugs sitting on my shelf half empty once it has been exposed to air. As a result, I would feel better about just buying a 5 quart jug + 3 single quart bottles rather than keeping half of a jug on my shelf half empty.

I live in Phoenix, Az area - HOT summers.
I have a 2010 XLT 150 screw, with the 5.4 flex fuel - would switching to Amsoil 0-30 be ok? It's the full synthetic, whereas manual recommends 5-20. I have 91k miles, owned since new, been using semi-synthetic since new.
Thanks.
