When I needed my first service, I called the dealer closest to me, asking the service desk specifically how much synthetic would cost. The guy didn't know what synthetic oil was. Fail.

The next dealer first said they all come with synthetic, then said semi-synthetic, then didn't know. So I asked him if they were going to a full synthetic oil change for $30. "Umm...I'd have to check..." Fail.

The third dealer at least knew what synthetic was, knew that it cost more. and tragically wanted $90 for the oil change with full synthetic. So even though they weren't convinced the full synthetic was necessary(they could at least discuss it) they were happy to take my money and do what I asked.

It's amazing how ignorant the "experts" who work on these vehicles are.

I think next time I'm bringing my own oil.

This is why I like Mr. Lube/Jiffy Lube. At least I can feel them tighten up the oil drain and I can see what oil they put in the motor. If you ask for synthetic there they don't have them in bulk so they use jugs so you know your getting synthetic. Having someone take my truck somewhere I can't see makes me nervous.

I just take a case of Mobil 1 5W-30 to the dealer. That way they don't use the 5W-20 all the other Ford engines use. The first time I did this, they asked why I only brought 6 quarts. I told them because that is all that is required for the Ecoboost.

I always take my own oil to the dealer, but that is mainly because I exclusively use either Mobil 1 or Amsoil(oil and filters) which dealers do not stock. Ford's Motorcraft branded Conoco full synthetic is supposedly a very good oil and Motorcraft filters are absolutely top notch, but Mobil 1 or Amsoil(Baldwin Labs) oil filters are even better and my baby gets the best. My dealer does oil changes for $6 for me since I bring my oil stuff in.

Wow, $6!??? That's a deal!

Just found it from my father in law that he uses Amsoil in his old 1990 F250 diesel. He has over 750k miles on the same engine!

When I switch over, I think I'm going to Amsoil, or Royal Purple.

I agree with the use of Amsoil 0W-30 giving that you live in Saskatchewan.

I live in NJ, and use Amsoil XL 5W-30 in my Ecoboost since 3500 miles.

Here is my experience with bringing my own oil to the dealer. It was with my '06 F250 6.0L. I brought the required amount of Rotella full synthetic.
The service writer said to me, " Kinda like bringing your own eggs to a diner, don't you think?" They really were not too impressed that I brought my own oil.

Talking Still doin' it myself...

I'm 60 years old and I still change my own oil; heck, I just did my EB FX4 today with a Motorcraft oil filter and Pennzoil Ultra.
I torque every nut and bolt as necessary; I'm not on a time and productivity schedule!

I rotated the tires and while doing so I cleaned the inside of the wheel and the brake hat to ensure a clean mating of the two; to me it's important that things go back together cleanly and properly tightened.

There'll be a day when I'll have to go the dealer for oil changes and such but hopefully that's quite a way off.

I do all my own maintenance and whatever else I can manage....

Dealers around here definately don't even touch that subject.

i guess they feel some kind of liability issue since they're putting in customer provided oil....

I asked once, absolutely NOT

It is possible that it is due to the terms of their commercial liability policy. As a personal and business banker, I can understand why dealers may choose to have such policies. It makes absolutely no sense, but I suppose they want to draw a very clear line in terms of deciding not to use customer supplied parts.

Yeah, dealers like that are hard to find especially in Alaska where the cost of many things is sky high. They have absolutely no problem with me bringing in my stuff.
