Default AEM 28-20385 drop in dry filter 5.0 review

Ok, I have had a K&N CAI 63-2581 with open filter and a universal Airaid open filter on same setup. I tried a K&N drop in first but it fit so tight and was vey loud plus you have to oil it. I also have no resonator and a 40842S Borla stinger. I really liked the K&N CAI and did it to install my Mustang 5.0 engine cover because the OEM intake tube gets in the way. I wanted to have a more factory look so I sold the K&N and Airaid cone style filter to another member and bought the Airaid Jr kit 401-799. I really just wanted the modular tube in this kit, but it was almost as high for the tube as the whole kit with the drop in airaid synthamx filter that came with it. While the K&N CAI was the loudest, the Airaid Jr with the tube and filter it came with seemed a little too quiet and bogged down on the bottom end. The Airaid tube appears to be larger than the K&N I had so the Airaid Dry filter 861-397 that came with the Airaid jr kit would probably work better with the stock OEM tube because it is smaller, I don't know because I never tried it but did sell that filter to another member here just as I did the K&N CAI. Eveything I sold was like new. I put the OEM paper filter back in while I was trying to decide what to do. Truck seemed to run better with the paper and the modular tube. So now here I am with this AEM 28-20385 dry drop in filter. Let me tell you that this is the perfect setup as far as my trucks response. Great low end get up like the OEM paper but a little more snap, sound is perfect. Mean growl, volume but just right no vibrations. This is the best bang for my buck. Filter was like $38.99 shipped. I am vey happy and pleased with these two combined. SO recap is that I have a Airaid modular tube from the Jr kit and a AEM 28-20385 dry filter and it sounds and runs awesome. The filter seems to be of a high quality with mesh support. I am not sure if it has only one layer of media, I know the Airaid has more but this one performs very well. And it fits perfect, not too tight just right once you get it into place. I highly recommend it and you just wash it out and no oil!

Thanks for the review...we have seen similar results with the AEM on the 5.0 and the Ecoboost. We have a stock truck that we are going to put on the dyno soon to document the gains with just the filter...it won't be earth shattering, but anything you get out of such a cheap mod is well worth it...

Thanks Eric. Is the truck going to be a 5.0? This filter to me is perfect and more economical than any of the others IMHO. I am totally satisfied with AEM.

It will be an Ecoboost...I would love to do the same test with a 5.0, but don't have a stock one available right now...

Very curious on the filter results for the Eco, with and without a tune.

Still loving this setup and filter. I hope you all enjoy the new filter, I think it is truly the best I've had on my 5.0

I just added the AEM drop in filter to my 2011 F150 5.0. I think the throttle response is much better since it was added. Maybe it is just the fact my old filter needed to be changed and a regular filter would have made a difference as well but I can definitely tell the difference since it was added.

I just installed an AEM drop in filter to my 2012 ecoboost. I definitely feel better throttle response (although this could partially be due to the fact my filter needed to be changed as well).

My only concern when installing the filter is the way it fit into the intake box - would be the same as the 5.0. The AEM wasn't quite large enough to sir cleanly on the top edges of the box. No matter how I positioned the filter there was a slight gap on either the driver side or the bumper side of the box and the passenger side and driver side of the filter both pinched in a little.

Maybe not a big issue, just a little concerning that some un-filtered air could be passing around the edges of the filter and into the intake tube.

Curious to see if anyone else experienced this when installing their AEM?
