Default 6.2 Harley 17.7 mpg

Driving from Baton Rouge to Pensacola with cruise set at 73mph. Not that I really care much about fuel mileage, but I thought this was pretty good. With 22" wheels and a fiberglass tonneau cover, my truck isn't exactly light. Running the 87 economy tune from 5 Star. Tank was almost full of 93 from when I was running the 93 performance tune.

now drop it down to 65mph and see what you can get lol. your rpm's are high! 2K for it to be set on cruise control seems like alot. I'd be getting like 9mpg if i set my truck at that rpm. heck i try to keep it under 2500 rpm when i accelerate. in my 2006 65mph is about 1400 rpm.

Nice number from all that motor! Looks like you averaged about 54 MPH on this trip - right?

I had some in-town driving mixed in there (~50 mi). But on the interstate, I kept the cruise set on 73. That's about as slow as I can go! Even that was painful at times.

The closest interstate for me is over an hour away....so the fastest road is the highway which is 55, and if you go over 65 you get pulled. I'd love to cruise at 73

This and other related threads once again confirms what I have been saying/thinking about the 6.2L compared to the other engine options...the 6.2L is hands down the best engine option in power/gas mileage/reliability. End of story.

I find it hard to believe that you are running at 1400 at 65. Let's assume he is running exactly 2000 at 73, that would put him at 1780 RPM at 65. Given that there are 3.73 gears in the HD, your gear ratio would need to be a 2.93 to run at 1400 assuming that the transmission gearing was the same for your overdrive gear as it is for the current year's six speed (I believe it is 0.7:1 for the 2006 vs 0.69:1 for the 2011). Unless you have pretty big tires on there...

Although like you, I didn't buy the truck because it sips fuel, that's about what I see with my Ltd if I stay out of it as well (22s, soft trifold tonneau). If I am a bit slower (mostly two lanes around here in Northern Ontario) is can get a bit better still. I find the 6.2 to be a pretty good engine with fuel mileage that comes pretty close to that of my '08 5.3 GMC.
