Talking Follow-up from post # 1158

I logged 437 miles after I put the 87 PT tune back on the truck. Open road, several steep pases, and stop and go city driving. Averaged 17 MPG on that trip. Considering the heavier Fuel wheels, bigger Durotracs, & 2" level, I'm not too disappointed. The truck has plenty of giddy-up, and I really like the addition of the Banks exhaust and intake, very little extra noise, but noticeable improvement in drivability. I am very pleased with 5 Star Tuning's expertise.

I have a '13 Lariat EB, 4x4 Off-Road, 3.55 gears and run the 87 P/T tune with 87 octane (unfortunately with ethanol) fuel.

A couple things. I am overall happy with the tune and have been using it for over a year however the shifting in traffic bugs be sometimes. I am not sure if im the only one with this issue or not but ill attempt to describe it. There are two main issues I see and a few questions:

- Coming up to a stop sign quickly, truck comes to a stop and you hit the accelerator, then nothing but reving for a second or two (long enough for you to realize it and think you arent really on the pedal so you push a bit more) then it clicks into gear and bam. I think this has to do with the 3 - 1 downshift Ford does, may not be tune related.

- In traffic and you are in 3rd gear. Then you lightly push the pedal to go a bit and it decides it needs to downshift into 2nd gear so it takes a few seconds to go anywhere.

- This one is weird and I am sure there is a valid explanation for this (ie. Torque Converter or something). When I am in gear (mainly notice it in 3rd) and I am accelerating, my RPMs seem to go down (though I am still accelerating) before they go up. Can someone explain this to me?

- When I am cruising along and need to accelerate quickly, push on the pedal hard (but not hard enough to downshift) and I hear some popping (predetonation?) in the engine/tranny area.

Like I said, I am happy with the tune and this is the only one i've tried. Based on reviews, I think I made the right decision and I am a fickle person. Mainly I'm just curious if others notice this too. Do you notice and disregard? Am I an isolated case? Do you just not notice it?

Thanks guys and 5 Star!

Honestly I would give 5 Star a call. And maybe send them a datalog.

I can't answer many of your questions as something seems strange. Do these things happen on the stock tune?

The 3rd gear rpms dropping is normal,to a small extent, for slight acceleration as the torque converter is locking. Mine does the same.

Assume they can fix this as other tuners have this fixed.....

I had talked to them at one point but didn't purse. I don't remember if it did it stock or canned tune. It seems to get worse as the tranny "learns" over time.

I would talk to them again and continue until you are happy. But first maybe drive the truck stock or on the canned tunes for a while and see if it is reproduced. That would narrow it down to being a tune issue or truck issue.

But in the mean time if it seems like it is over time then just do a KAM reset. There is an option to do so on the X4. Also a lot of the problems can be solved with replacing and gapping plugs to .028 and cleaning the MAP sensors as they can get fouled up with oil.

Thanks for the reply. I have replaced my plugs, I'm at 24k now.
