Never did quite work right while tuned, minor issue at first, then started throwing codes over/under boost,...then custom tuners PC crashed and had to get new tunes since couldn't recover and was sold an 'upgrade' for all my tunes for another $150...
Truck still had same issue, but only happened while tuned until about 8 months ago, had an exhaust leak at exhaust manifold, was fixed, but yet had intermittent problem while not tuned, but consistent tuned. Finally just pulled tune off and left off and gained another issue. With Ford trying to fix the issue they re-flashed my truck to a new strategy code, which didn't fix the issue, finally they found a cracked tube that had been glued back on, they figured the previous dealer when working on my exhaust manifold cracked it and tried fixing it with glue, so they replaced whole piece and now truck runs great.
Knowing I needed an updated tune to the new strategy I contacted the tuner, who tells me I must pay for an upgrade and how much better the tunes are now than then and it's an additional $150 and the free upgrades was a horrible business strategy that the company has since had to change...

Maybe the tuner exposed issues the truck already had, maybe not, but yet to pay again and not be confident the original issue was ever fixed...fool me twice....Tunes ran great most of the time and made the truck fun to drive, but I think its time to go elsewhere...maybe I just need to vent
That is quite the story. If you already have the SCT programmer then just order a tune. Most companies sell a tune from $50-$90. Just order one from each and see how you like it. I am very curious as to who the tuner is, hoping he is not a site vendor. If your tuner uses a different device then you may have to pay for a SCT programmer which may make things too expensive.

Yes it's a SCT touchscreen tuner.

Then the tuning world is open to you. Try one from everyone until you find the one you like. I like 5 Star because of the warranty. I know they are a little more modest with their tuning but still make tonnes of power. Seen some dynos of over 500ft lbs of torque in their performance tunes. Great drivability.

I've been running the 5star 87 perftow basically since I bought the truck. Have tunes from a couple other custom tuners on here, the 5star easily has the best drivability. Best combination of throttle response (without being too touchy like another tune I have) and shift strategies, that is when my truck doesn't decide to bang the 3-4 upshift on it's own.

I think 5-Star P/T tunes are the ones by which all others should be judged, not because it is the best as that is user and truck dependent, but because the P/T tune is the one that makes the truck drive as it should from the factory.

^ I agree. For people that don't want a race truck, just a comfortable, pleasant shift strategy, and a reliable, but still considerable increase in power. I personally enjoy how the truck builds boost before revs and timing on a p/t tune rather than using revs and timing then boost on the performance tunes. That is in my opinion.

It's not the fastest or most power. But perfect for people that want better than stock. And pull a camper like a son of a fun(autocorrected but I'll leave it ).

I just received my x4 with 5 star tunes. I have to say I'm pretty excited. It's fun just to be able to apply different settings to your truck and make it behave completely differently.

I noticed that when I go to apply the custom tune I have the option to adjust the shift pressures. Does anyone know if changing the values apply on top of what the custom tune already specifies or does it change it from stock values? I'm applying the 87p/t tune and the user adjustable values all say 0 but I'm certain the tune changes the shift firmness.

Yes. I just leave the adjustable options alone apart from tire size and top speed limiter.

Unless your tire size were adjusted by 5 Star.

My SCT X4 with 5* custom tunes is completely locked out of all options and the canned tunes. I can only load the 5* custom tunes or return to stock. I am covered by their 6/100 warranty, so I'm sure that's why they locked it down so tight. And, I'm ok with that. If I want something changed, I just have to ask them to do it. I do wish I could at least change tire size and speed limiter, but I really don't plan on changing tire size, and 100 mph is probably fast enough.
