5 Star Ecoboost Tune Reviews
#1041
Have you guys ever had to reload your tune? I had been running the 87 p/t tune for about 2250 miles as of yesterday, but something just started to feel off with my truck. It was like it was running kind of sluggish and there seemed to be a faint shudder at certain speeds/power ranges. I put the stock tune back in yesterday evening when I got home from work, and everything seems to be normal now... it sure does feel much slower than the 5-Star tune though!
Back to the original question, have any of you guys had to do this? If so, do you know what the cause is?
Thanks for the help!

Mine also started acting up a couple weeks ago after running the 87 p/t tune for the last 3000 miles. It would idle rough and if you had to kick it down, would shudder and miss. I was thinking plugs, but put stock tune back in and all is well. My truck has 23,000 miles on it and is a 2011 with factory plugs still.

Very interesting... Maybe Stage3Motorsports or 5star can chime in to the weird characteristics after extended periods?

New set of sp534 gapped to .028 and installed less than 5k miles ago... Hopefully it's not the plugs. Glad to hear I'm not the only one this has happened to, but it's frustrating nonetheless. I'd be anxious to hear what Mike has to say about it; maybe I'll contact him.

Here's the video I took of it backfiring. You can also hear how rough the idle was at the end, kind of sounds like the idle of a big cam in a push rod V8. I haven't had any issues after going back to stock and then loading the 89 p/t tune (almost 1,000 miles now), so I think that pretty much rules out a plug or coil issue. I've read other threads talking about similar issues after you run a tune for awhile, causing some to just go back to stock and leave it there. I hope that's not the case. It's just too much fun on the tunes. I guess you could just do like Voz and tune it 18 times every 5,000 miles. I hope it doesn't turn out to be an adaptive learning issue. Sometimes too much technology sucks. My LS2 has been on the same tune for 6 years and 30,000 miles and hasn't skipped a beat. But, when you turn the TC off on it also, it's off and it stays off until you run out of nads.

I just recently changed to the 87 economy tune from the 87p/t.
P/t was hesitating at times almost like a lean bog on a carbureted engine.
Started doing it on our cooler fall mornings when the engine and tranny are not up to full operating temps. Seemed okay at full temps. Was very good in hot weather.
Perhaps the engine protection kicks in when not quite warmed to full temps. I'm thinking leaner and hotter fuel /air mixtures in the tune trigger a temporary safe mode to avoid potential detonation or too much power before optimal operating conditions are reached.
This was on my warranty tune. The previous non-warranty tune did not reveal this characteristic but was all long towing trips in summer heat.

I also find the 87 economy tune to be very smooth and easy to drive. The throttle tip in is much easier to manage with lower power output for the first half of the pedal travel.
I believe this will aid in icy winter driving by being much easier to drive smoothly and maintain traction. It also doesn't feel any slower than stock when given a little more throttle.
The p/t feels too strong and hard hitting down low for easy winter driving. Probably ruin a set of Blizzaks real quick with spinning on every throttle push.

I plan on doing plugs in the near future and no I have not gapped them. I know the problems will amplify due to the tune and be more noticeable.
After a 100 miles on the stock tune I got on it quite a bit and it was night and day... It did not miss a beat, I do plan on doing plugs soon just for piece of mind...
