Default 5.0L Oil Filter Failure

Not complaining, just a statement of caution.

The Motorcraft, made by Purolator, oil filter inner seal came apart and ended up clogging the oil passages and starved the motor. The motor seized and is being replaced.

I've searched on the net and haven't found any issues with purolator oil filters since 2010.

Again, not complaining just giving folks a heads up......one in a million and it was mine.

I assume Ford is replacing your engine, and doing so under warranty (since it was the correct Motorcraft filter than killed it, in a year-old truck.)

So, it's bad that the Motorcraft part failed... but you'd probably be worse off if you were using a different filter and THAT one failed, because then Ford would point the finger at the filter manufacturer, and they'd say Ford should pay, lather/rinse/repeat.

Yes, it is being covered under warranty, there are only 19438.6 miles on the truck. I was also lucky that all service has been at the dealership where I bought the truck.
I found out, yesterday, that the filter that came apart was not the filter that was on the truck, it was from a previous filter/oil change.....
The only way a tech would know that there were parts/pieces of the filter is to cut the filter open. Thats how they knew it wasn't the current filter.
I also found out that Purolator makes Motorcraft oil filters.
If you have to breakdown on the interstate, make sure you are around Springfield, MO and are towed to Republic Ford in Republic, MO. :-) Service department personnel are courteous, knowledegable and helpful....it is also helpful when you are dealing with fellow gearheads.

There have been several well known issues with Purolators as of late. Bob Is The Oil Guy is full of torn media reports. Here is one "master post" -

It had been speculated that Motorcrafts were not part of the defective "batches" but I guess they may be creeping that way too.

Nothing to be alarmed at yet but something to keep a close eye on!

Hi rbailey3711,

Sounds like a frustrating situation, but I'm glad your dealership is treating you like gold. If you'd like, I'd be happy to document your feedback about this dealership for internal review. To get the ball rolling, PM me your full name, best daytime phone number, VIN, dealership info, and any specifics you'd like me to include. I'll take it from there.

Crystal

Any more details; how did it run before locking up? Oil/engine light come on? Any symtoms at all?

Just curious...I'm about to change the oil on mine and I've got a motorcraft FL-500S and a Fram Ultra Synthetic filter sitting on my shelf. Decisions...

Hi Poolville02,

When it happened, I was on I-44, passing a semi. It felt like it was down shifting, it was two chugs and the check engine light came on. Within 3 seconds the screen display showed "oil pressure low." Within a second it was off, no power for steering or brakes, I coasted to the shoulder.

Look at itguy08's post and follow the link to bobtheoilguy's site, he has a good list of filters that have been failing from Purolator.

The mechanic's at Republic Ford said the way it happened, I wouldn't have had the time to turn it off, the damage was already done to the top end of the motor, intake, push rods, valve guides and valves. Also, it wasn't the current filter that caused the damage/issue. When the current filter was cut open, the pieces found in the oil passages were still intact. It was an internal part of the filter. On Bobtheoilguy's site, there are pictures and posts about the parts that have been failing in the filters.

I still standby the work of the Quick lube folks at my home dealership, Victor Ford in Wauconda IL. As the service department at Republic Ford indicated, as well as on Bobtheoilguy's site, no one would buy a filter, take it apart inspect it and expect to use it. It is a problem but how many filters are manufactured by Purolator and the majority aren't having trouble. I had 98,000 miles on my '99 and 126,000 on my '05 F150 without any oil filter issues.
In this case, I was fortunate that I had all the service done at my dealership. If I had done it myself or at one of the other oil change facilities, I probably would have a difficult time with FMC.

Hope this helps.

Well this is unsettling considering I use motorcraft filters in all my fords.
