Is this a result of too low of rpms and lugging the engine or do you think I should check my plug gap? Reading through this thread I saw where some others have described this same thing and said that gapping the plugs down helped. With mine being a 13, do you guys think it would hurt if I went down to .045 instead of the now ford recommended .049. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
I noticed a delay like action in my throttle too most of the times running slow in 5th when I have to decelerate, then go to get back on the throttle and it seems to have to catch back up. some guys on another forum recommended doing what they call a Throttle Positioner Sensor reset. I did this and it really did seem to help and i clean my TB regular. Here is what I was told to do: Turn Key on and let the dinging noise stop, wait about 3 seconds, Push the pedal down slowly to the floor, let off quick, turn off the key. Repeat 2 more times for a total of 3 times. This is suppose to reset the position and remove the delay. It seems to have worked on mine and now in 5th at the same place it just pulls right off the pedal when I hit it. Maybe someone else that has more experience can chime in.

2011 FX4 5.0 Stock- Getting ready to change the plugs. Engine has 112K.

I know the 2011 manual calls for .041 to .047 for the 2011 but the 11 to 14 Workshop Manual calls for .049-.053 (Believe it changed for 2012).

Does anyone know why the change occurred?

For the 2011 5.0, what is the best gap? Will be towing a 5-6K pound trailer a decent amount and live at 4500 ft elevation. Was thinking of going with .045 but wanted some second opinions. Thanks in advance.

thats shat I would do, I think you will be perfect at the setting. They may have changed the spec possibly due to a error or could be that they may think this helps gas mpgs, but who really knows? I just want the best performance out of my truck and the lower gap seems to have helped get rid of that annoying knock I use to get under light acceleration in 6th gear.

Default Plug change

Figured I’d chime in since I looked at this before changing plugs. 2013 5.0 with 108k. First change. Went with NGK 6509 plugs. They were all gapped the same prob about .042. Regapped to .044. All motorcraft plugs pulled were .060+. Disconnected battery and idle relearn. Just drove around seems to be good.

The gap will grow with mileage as the electrodes wear. If Ford specs a plug change at 100,000 miles they must know that the gap will be quite a bit larger than what it was set to. These few thousandths of difference in installation specs are small. Might be getting distracted on something not that important.

I too have been trying to figure this plug gap mess out. From what I have read it sounds like Ford changed the type of plugs in the 2012 F-150 5.0L. The plugs in the 2011 F-150 5.0L were iridium plugs Motorcraft SP-519. Ford changed to platinum plugs Motorcraft SP-548 in 2012 to 2014. Therefore this might explain the difference in the plug gaps specified in the owner's manuals. The Motorcraft SP-519 iridium plugs are no longer available. Ford now recommends the SP-548 platinum plugs for the 2011 5.0L. So the gap probably depends on which plug you are running in your 2011 5.0L engine. Can anyone else shed any light on this or am I all wet???
