Default 5.0 short block replacement

I'm getting my short block replaced in my 2011 f150 next week. Should it be treated as a new engine and broken in? I'm assuming they'll use new head gaskets and coolant.

You ask ten different people that question and you're gonna get ten different answers.
Here's mine.... Drive it normally. Any "break in" will be achieved within the first ten minutes of use. Change your oil and last but not least, enjoy.

Bring on the next nine recipes!

Got my truck back 2 weeks ago with short block, dealer never said anything about break in. So far so good.

Thanks! I will probably run Valvoline full synthetic 5-30 with a motor craft filter. HOPEFULLY there will be no defects in this new block. I'll be ready to start making the truck more my own with a leveling kit, tires, pipes, etc.

Check your manual... The recommended oil is 5w20.

Using the wrong weight oil is not good on the engine, the closer tolerances of these newer engines demand the proper weight, temperature be damned. You cant use old school thinking.

You best get that oil changed asap.

I'm pretty sure some of the 5.0 mustangs specify 5w30...so I'm not 100% sure the 5w20 is used because of tight tolerances or solely for mpg purposes. Still, I think i'd use 5w20 next oil change if it were me. I'd just feel a little more secure having what the manual specifies in the engine. But I probably wouldn't drain fresh 5w30 out of the engine to do so.

Take my word for it or not, your truck engine is not the same 5.0 from a few years ago. I am Ford factory trained on engine repair and it IS due to the closer tolerances between the bearing surfaces of the crank, as well as all 4 cams in the engine etc...

All of the below specs are straight out of the 2013 Ford shop manual.

Camshaft journal to bearing clearance 0.001-0.002 in
Crankshaft journal to bearing clearance .0009-0.0018 in
Connecting rod to crankshaft journal clearance 0.0011-0.0027 in

Go ahead and shorten the life span of your engine if you wish but don't say no one warned you.
