Maybe a little rumble but not enough to matter or notice. Don't know if he was trying to sell me a new muffler or being honest with me.
He's right as that's what I did first.

I had a 14" sido with no res and dumped right out of the muffler it droned. Dumped it behind the axle and that helped alot. Went back with a 3" res and drone is gone, but didnt take away much from the volume when u mash on it. I like it now, set the cruise and barely notice it.

I have the stock pipes and just swapped out the muffler to a 14" muffler. It was still too quiet where even my wife didn't realize I swapped the muffler. I took out the resonator and I now like the sound... of course my wife doesn't.
I believe the stock resonator goes down to 2.5" in diameter. I'm guessing your cat back exhaust is 3" mandrel bent throughout. I'd just recommend just having a local muffler shop install another short 3" in 3" out straight through muffler. I'd go with something about as short as the stock resonator, that way you don't lose any of that good air flow you got going on now by reinstalling the stock resonator. I think it should be a little bit louder than with the stock resonator installed because of the better air flow but it should mellow out the drone.

Here's a link from another thread with my muffler swap with my resonator still in.

I was also planning on doing something like this. I'm looking for a really cheap way to make my truck louder. Should I swap the muffler for a straight pipe or the resonator for a straight pipe? Which one would make the deeper sound? I was thinking if i just swap the muffler with a pipe for now, I could at least put in a magnaflow later on. Anyone do something like this?
