Default 5.0 questions

first off i have never owned a ford product of any kind. truckwise chevrolet and nissan. 175,000 on my nissan with absolutely zero issues. never even changed spark plugs.

time to trade of the nissan and from a cosmetic viewpoint the f150 is a great looking truck. found a 2012 with 70,000 miles and the 5.0 motor. xlt package 3:31 rear gears.

since looking at this forum the piston slap seems to be an issue. do people see this issue after say 50k miles? searching here it seems the issue has been found a t 50k or less. im looking into an extended warrenty but honestly i never had to worry about warrenties before. i need a truck that can handle my 18 ft car hauler and race car towing it to various events around the southeast. originally was going to look for a ecoboost motor but see just as many issues as the 5.0.

2012 f150 supercab with 72k miles xlt package 5.0 xlt package 17,000$

Welcome to the forum!

The piston issue IIRC was pretty much solved after the '11 model year. (correct me if I'm wrong anyone)

Couple observations: with the 3.31 gears your truck might be a dog when towing with the 5.0 - especially if you put larger tires on. But, coming from a V6(assuming you had a Frontier?) you might not notice so much. Several folks on here have commented that even with the 3.55s they wish they had the 3.73 gearset. It all depends on how heavy the loaded car hauler is.

I can't comment on the warranty.

daily driver. hopefully this gear will help fuel mileage while towing without issues since i cant change it. the frontier was 4.0 v6 with 330 hp which wasnt bad for towing but at 6000 lb capacity i was on the edge with my setup and gear.

if the issues were resolved in 11 thats a relief since this is a late 2012.

this truck comes with the xlt package tow package running boards and 7100 lb gvwr package

Coming from a Frontier Pro 4x, Ill take this F150 any day over that truck. Traded the frontier at 24k miles and haven't looked back.

like i said i dont have any ford experience. as for my frontier its been simply bulletproof. it pulls my rig without complaint until i get in the mountains. and honestly even with trailer brakes on both axles the truck doesnt like big decents. all in all i cant complain but its time for something else. i just dont want to buy a headache. seems the new gm trucks are 4 speed trans and drum brakes on the rear so thats out. dont like dodge and the nissan/toyota full size trucks are crazy money.

wish i could find a 5.0 /eco with 3:55 at a decent price but none so far. only eco i found even close has the 3:15 gears 2011 and still 21k$

Was not aware that Nissan put a 330 hp V6 in the Frontier.
