Default 5.0 MPT 89 tow review

So today I installed my tune from MPT. I had a half of a tank of 87, so I filled the rest with 93 octane, then drove the truck a short while to make sure it was mixed to at least 89 octane. Anyway, I installed the tune right before work at a nearby parking lot. That way I could still get to work just in case SHTF. The tune took a while to load but it went very smooth. I gingerly drove the last 100 yards to work and the first thing I noticed is how damn awesome the truck sounds now, even at quarter throttle! The truck is 100% stock otherwise.
Well, it was a long day of work and i was finally ready to give it a try. Since it was cold, I made sure to drive it a couple miles to warm up. Then I turned onto the interstate on ramp. Hot Damn. This truck rips now! The truck is stronger at all RPMs. Furthermore, it's almost as if the truck came stock with a loose throttle cable and the gurus at MPT tightened everything up. It's the only way I know how to explain it. I am simply blown away on how fast the truck is now and how great it sounds. As an added benefit, the truck downshifts in normal mode much akin to tow/haul mode on a stock truck but not as aggressively. This setup is perfect since even though I save gas by coasting, you can only coast so far. Simply put, it is setup such that I hardly need to brake, yet I can still coast a long ways. Beautiful!
The turn around time for the tune was around a week and I could not be happier. To the crew at MPT - you guys rock!

So do you have to buy a handheld tuner and then a custom tune?

Yes. I had a handheld tuner for my old truck from VMP,. When I got rid of the truck, I 'un-mated' it from that truck so I could use it on my current truck. You only need to by one handheld tuner for the rest of your life, but just make sure you return your old vehicle to factory, otherwise it will be useless.

Good review. I've been thinking of trying a tune from MPT..I just loaded my 5* 87 perf tune today, but haven't tried it yet.

Thanks for the review its rare to see 5.0 reviews it seems. Is this the only MPT tune you have? Any others to compare to?

This is the only tune I have right now. if you use f150forums for a code, you can get a tune for $55. I don't think I would really care for any other tune, honestly. I wouldn't want any of the "performance" tunes since many are not recommended for towing. I don't tow much, but who knows when you need to and the tunes take a good 10 minutes to load. We have both 91 and 93 octanes here in WI for premium fuel. If I got the 93 octane, it might be a pain to find a gas station. if I got 91 octane, i would feel like I was wasting money at the shops that have only 93 octane. Both Premiums are sometimes ethanol free here so they can get very expensive. Not worth it for me.
Stay tuned for mileage reports. I wasn't expecting better, but it has done very well so far. I am at 20.2 MPG since driving 40 miles home. I locked in cruise at 57 mph like I ALWAYS do. No tune and 87 octane I would usually get 19. It is still too early to tell, but remember, I just got a new toy so I did let it rip at a couple of stop signs!

I've had tunes from VMP for a 4.6L and 5.4L, both 2 valves. They were 91 octane tunes if I remember correct. I know it is apples to oranges, but I did not notice the increases as much with those trucks as I did with my new truck. I did actually look towards VMP first since they are a good company. The only problem I had was that there website is totally stagnant. What is going on there?! I had my doubts that they were making any big strides with the 5.0L engines.

It seems like tunes make a pretty big difference on the mustangs from what I've heard, so it seems reasonable that a time on the 5.0 would be more beneficial than in some of the older v8's.

I had a hyper tech on my 5.3, mainly to correct tire size and it made a small difference. But wouldn't be worth it without the larger tire correction.
