There is something to gain; people have reported less of a tick with oil heavier than 5w-20.
And the motor is actually engineered to use 5w-20, 5w-30, and 5w-50..

Thanks for the link; I've spent a lot of time on BITOG and have seen the same article. I'll definitely be using a 0Wxx oil, to help with start ups especially in the winter here in northern Montana.

I know it's supposed to be 5w20 for all conditions, but a 5Wxx oil below -25F gets much thicker than a 0Wxx and getting the oil flowing sooner is better.

Right; and the Mustang's 5.0 with Track Pack is specified to use 5w50, with no change to the oiling system that I've been able to find.

Further and for example, Toyota suggest for their 4.0 V6 engine to use 0w20. But for the FJ Cruiser, the owner's manual says to use a higher viscosity for towing, heavy duty or high speed driving. And then there's other manufacturers (I hate to say it, but -kaff kaff- chevy -kaff kaff-) who recommend a 5w40, but say a 5w30 is ok for "light duty use" in the same engine.

Fully aware of warranty requirements I think I'll be using a 0W30.

I've always stuck with the vehicle manufacturer recommended weight, although when using motorcraft or any other oil that is of as poor of quality, having high shear percentages that viscosity rating doesn't hold true for the duration of the drain interval. I use amsoil because it is tested and proven to be superior. You guys should check into it.

Wow, it's been awhile for this thread LOL! Since 2014 I have moved from northern MT and (after current job training) will be living in Ohio.

I, too am an Amsoil fan and almost always use it; however right now I'm trying out some Schaeffer 9000.

Also in the middle of a thick vs thin test, running 5w30 and 5w20 and then even a 5w40 once I switch back to Amsoil in a couple of months. I'll be having an oil analysis done after each run (5000 miles planned) to compare wear and mpg. Although nonscientific I will try to keep the driving the same for each run. (Schaeffer is included in the test)

Maybe there will be a difference between grades, maybe there won't be but at least I'll be satisfied with some sort of real data.

data id good. I'd like to know how it turns out. Please update. Ya I tend to research and forget to read the dates when I Have input. I was a long time user of Mobil 1 until I bought my Shelby. Very few 5w50's on the market. None available for in store purchase where I am. I read and read about all the different oils and viscosities. After a few months I chose amsoil. Then shortly after I became a preferred customer I became a dealer. Very pleased With the oil.

Weight? Right weight?
