Default 5.0 Knocking sound at idle

Is it normal for the 5.0 to make a slight knocking sound at idle?

Yes, what you are hearing is the direct injection at work.

The 5.0 does NOT have direct injection. You may be hearing the fuel injectors.

Mine has a slight knocking sound when the engine is cold but mainly I hear the fuel injectors which are very noisey. What is the build date of your truck? Mine is 8/11/11. After 20 minutes of driving and the engine is fully warm mine is pretty quiet. Maybe slight piston slap on mine?? Looking foward to the vid to compare.

Do a search, there are 2 TSBs relating to engine noise. One is for the water pump, the other has to do with the cam chain.

My truck doesnt fall in any build dates for those tsb's. The truck is to new. Thats why I question the op's build date because he may fall into the tsb build dates. These engines are noisey. Whats normal and whats not.....who knows. My 2012 5.0 Mustang is 100 times quiter than the 5.0 in the truck. The mustang has a later build date.

Ahhh, welcome to the knocking club! Ford will have you believe it is normal. How do you feel after purchasing a brand new truck with an engine knock? I can tell you that Fords competitors engines are quiet. So, is this knock normal? I dumped mine with only 3,600 miles on it. It will get louder! Mine was so loud. Especially when it was warm outside. This engine will self destruct in short time. It cost me a few grand and much shopping, but I'm happy I did it. I feel bad for all that have this issue. It seems worse in the Mustang community. I will never buy a Ford again.

Fords main competitor GM does have some knocking engines running around... mainly some of the 5.3's. Generally when cold due to a little extra piston to cyl clearance which quickly goes away as the piston warms up.

This has to do with mass producing pistons and blocks and not checking the clearance... sometimes there is a slight tolerance difference.

Doesn't mean the engine is going to self destruct... I had a silverado with a 5.3 with the same problem and it lasted for 260,000 miles with no issues until I traded it in on an ecoboost.

The last of those engines was built in 2002. The piston design was changed almost 10 years ago. It affected all of the Vortec engines at the time...there were just more 5.3's built than any other.
