5.0 hard start when cold
#1
Recently, I've noticed my truck is having issues during cold starts. In the mornings, when I start it up, it takes a few seconds longer for the motor to crank over. The starter runs as if you were holding the key in the "start" position too long. When the engine does turn over, it sort of stumbles to life. This only happens when the engine is dead cold. Once warmed up, it starts normally without issue. I have not noticed any other issues (poor mpg, loss of power, rough idle, etc ) to suggest a cause of the problem. No codes stored on the PCM either. Only thing I have noticed is my battery voltage is like 11.6 - 11.9 volts (I was able to view it via the dash screen in engineering test mode), once started, the voltage is ok, like 14.2 - 14.6 volts. Any ideas? Thanks......

had the same problem only in reverse, hard to start when warmed up. my wifes 4Runner and my sons Z71( yea i know kids, he bought it) both vehicles turned out to be bad temp sensors. sensed the engine was cold when hot and flooded. never replaced sensors, removed wiring harness and cleaned. my sons did this after cleaning engine bay, 4Runner happened occasionally but a bitch to find the first time it happened. 2 shops could not figure it out, no codes.

I took a closer look at my battery today. Had some corrosion on the positive terminal. Took it off and cleaned both terminals good (used baking soda and water, works like a charm). Will see how it starts in the morning. One thing I noticed is that the little "eye" on the battery was black. Aren't those supposed to be green if the battery is ok?

I'm in the same boat. We got a very cold night and my battery actually went dead and the indicator turned red. Ford sent someone to jump it and I've been running it the long way home to make sure it gets charged but my indicator is now black. I'm def having the dealership replace my battery before it gets colder. My guess is the battery. Hope you get it figured out man.
