Not sure if this helps but here's my story:
Started with a 14" Magnaflow with no resonator. Way too much drone.
Put a glasspack on where resonator was and it was still too much with the 14" Magnaflow
Switched to the Borla 400436 Muffler and it made a big difference.
Over time I wanted a little bit more sound so I ditched the glass pack and went back to a straight pipe through the 400436 and now it's just about perfect.
I can cruise with almost zero drone but when I get on it it sounds phenomenal.
Unlike what you're looking for, I wanted the look of no pipes so I have mine cut right over the axle which oddly enough I think reduced the drone (the minimal amount there was) vs having the pipe out the back in the stock location.
Oh and there is none of that nasty rasp that I've heard with some of the louder set-ups. I'm as anti-rasp as they get and my current set up doesn't have a hint of it.
Mike_N: Do you have any sound clips to hear?
Is anyone with 5.0's running the Borla 40349. I stumbled on some 5.4 videos running the Borla 40349 and I must say they sound awesome. I am just wondering what it would sound like with the 5.0.

custom 5.0 borla exhaust
Little different setup, I have the muffler located right after the factory catted y-pipe, then 3" 304 SS piping all the way out. The muffler shop and I checked numerous locations, w/ resonator, without, etc. and it just sounded so much better located as close to the y-pipe as possible. check out the thread below. The vid does not do justice, but I am happy with the setup...

Let me see what I can get for you. I can easily get in the cab and start up and I'll see about a fly by too.

So here is another question. As far as performance go, is there any statistical/factual data as to which setup and diameters (2.5 vs 3, etc. offers the most gains, least losses in torque. and HP? Whan I ask this I am referring to:
1. True duals, X pipe style
2. Single in dual out
3. Dual in Dual out (Single Muffler)
4. Single in Single out
5 Dual in Dual out (with X pipe built into muffler)
I do not want any power loss form this, and hell for all I know, replacing anything cat back, may not have much of a difference unless going to true duals, in which I would be worried about losing too much backpressure and losing power.

Here is my truck with a single exit Borla stinger 2.5" used all of the factory piping except a short piece about 11''going into muffler and out into the 3" factory where it goes over the wheel. This is with the resonator and stock tip. This is a smooth sporty rumble, not too much. O' and no drone with any of these setups. More video on youtube with in cab and takeoffs/kick down etc.
And this is without the resonator and single dual tip
And this is same as above with a K&N CAI

Solaro7,
Did you chose a muffler setup? I think you would be happy with a single setup and it shouldnt affect your performance negatively.

If you are looking for the perfect balance, I really think you should take a look at the Borla touring catback system. Not only does it add a nice tone to your exhaust when you are getting on it, but it has absolutely no drone. It is a system that is exactly as loud as you want it to be. When I am cruising down the highway with my cruise control set at 60mph, it is no louder than stock. However once I get on the loud pedal, it purrs out a nice deep mellow note. When cruising down the interstate with the cruise control set at 70mph or above, it is a little louder than stock.

That sounds good. here is a clip I found on youtube

I am wondering whether that is the sport. It definitely sounds much more aggressive than my touring, and the touring is only available with the side exit style.
