5.0 Engine knock

Five-0 Ret.
It may be a good idea to call the Ford customer Rep. in your area, then go to another dealer for a second opinion. I just can't beleive that a knock in the engine is normal. The 5.0 in my Wifey's Mustang doesn't knock, so if yours does that surely doesn't make it normal. They are basically the same engine.

Thanks for the input and help guys.
I took the truck into the local dealer that I used to work at and swore I would never go back to, but trusted the guys I used to work with which is the ONLY reason I went back. Of course since it was a short drive and cold that day the engine wasn't knocking so they listened to it anyway. we ran the crap out of it as well trying to get it to knock and nothing. They ended up leaving the ticket open for a couple weeks so if I can get it to knock all i have to do is drive in and let them listen. Way more helpful than the service department at the dealership I bought it at, but then again the D***head shop manager was gone when I was there. As normal though I got in trouble for crossing the yellow line in the shop to help the mechanic understand where I am hearing the sound. The owner of the dealership (main part of the reason I had previously quit) made someone else tell me to move behind the line bc hes gutless to say it to my face in fear of what I would say in return. Either way my old mechanic buddies at the dealership are going to try and help me out, and they even put the complaint in the system so it will show up with ford even after warranty goes out. Just hope we can find it and get it fixed so I can take it back to the other dealership and bury it in their ***** and the break it off. Guess now I know why I prefer to do my own work on my vehicles. If it comes down to it I will have an oil test done. I know we have done it at CAT with out semis, but never thought that they mgiht mess with oil from a pickup. Thanks for the info on that. I will keep you guys posted!

Had a pm or two about this thread so I thought I would update everyone. After months of fighting with dealerships, Monday I had the truck in at the original place of purchase and I went straight to management kicking and screaming the whole way till I got to the head of the service department to actually listen to me. After I showed him the video on my phone of the knock he immediately claimed it to be a connecting rod after 5 seconds of the video and they are warrantying my truck and putting a short block in it. They had another truck in the dealership with the same sound and that is what they did to fix it so it looks like I will be getting a short block soon. Oh and they also paid for my service Monday as well.
Now if I can just get them to straighten out the sync system, and the new problem of my wipers automatically running intermittenly when they are shut off then things should be good, but unfortunately I am out of the 36,000 miles warranty so I have to come up with the money somewhere for these fixes or at least the wiper problem. Going to do some research on here to see if others have had this issue.

Steve392: I don't remember for sure what the issue was, but they have a tsb for your sound I believe. My sound is coming from the passenger side lower end in the block. Mine has a knock sound and not a pinging noise.

i'll have to have the wife rev the engine for me to see if I can pin point it. As for the TSB, i didn't see anything that pertained to me about the noise. I did see a TSB that has to do with my steering. When turning left the steering wheel almost feels "stuck" and I have to force it back around to the right.

I am 90% sure there is a TSB out for the driver side. I should still have that paper at home that the dealership gave me so I will look and see if it is on there. If it is a rattle sound it could be a bearing, but if it is a more of a ting it could be a valve or lifter in the head. A knock in the block of your engine will sound completely different from the others and you will know it for sure.

I too have a knock that I have posted about but thought I would add to this party. I've been in touch with Ford Customer Relationship Center regarding the issue and all they are willing to do is give me an extended warr., despite the fact that I have numerous service records and a video with the pronounced knock. For the record, I requested that the motor be replaced but since they have been unresponsive thus far I have requested a vehicle buy-back (lemon law eligible in CA due to 4 attempts to fix the issue with no remedy).
I for one do not find this knock to be normal... Take a listen.

It appears to be coming from the back of the motor which concerns me, I'm thinking crank bearings... Thoughts?
