5.0 with afe intake only
Will this mess up the way it runs. Some people say yes you must get a tune and intake. Why then have people been using intake only for years. Can't really fund an answer on here. What do you think.

Well I came from a 2001 5.4 lariat that had an intake but let's be honest that's a totally different league of engine. The newer engines I guess, are just so well tuned to the stock intake that the air filter leans out the mix. Idk

No (a tune is not required). HOWEVER ...
A tune would allow for more performance gains by maximizing the effect of the increased air flow.
Without a tune, the PCM and MAF will compensate over time (via adaptive learning), but nothing to the extent of a tune.
And I'm unanimous on that.

I had no problem running my intake and exhaust without a tune. I could tell a difference but really only in the high revs which made it feel like it was begging for higher shift points. At that point a bought a tuner and it definitely made a difference up top.
Beware that most tunes will give you spring throttle to make you think that there's more power down low, but that gains are not what they seem. When you barely tap the throttle pedal and the throttle plate is at 70%, that's not acceptable IMO. I still have yet to get a tune that wasn't like this and kept the WOT shift points of 6600-6700 with firm shifts. I must have tired 10 tunes too. Still looking for that perfect tune.
