5.0 2wd mpg

5.0 2wd mpg
I'm looking at possibly buying a SCREW XLT 2wd this year. I need 5K or so of towing capacity, so the 3.7 would work. Not that many out there and many that are don't have any of the upgrade packages. I'd like to keep it simple, so for now, I'd probably not go with an Ecoboost. That leaves the 5.0 which seems to be popular in the 2wd SCREW with the 3.55 RA.
I've done a fair amount of searching on the forum for mpg and got some good info. A lot of Ecoboost and 4wd though. For those 5.0 2wd owners, what MPG are you getting? Over the life of the truck the 2 mpg hit from 3.7 doesn't add up to be all that much, but I'd rather know what I can really expect going in if I go the 5.0 route. I could live with the 17 mpg overall per the EPA figures, but anything better would help.

I own ecoboost but read lots of mpg threads. The 5.0 is a great engine. And would fit well with your intended use. More than enough power for the 5k lb load. Also you should easily meet 17 mpg avg and be in the low 20s on hwy at 65 steady. From what I have read you are right with the 2 mpg diff with the 3.7. The 5.0 will also be more fun and have better resale. Best of luck on your decision.

Appreciate the reply. I agree, it would be good to have and the 5.0 for towing gives me almost a ton of added towing capacity if I need it in the future. It is DD for me and fully loaded towing will be a small amount of my overall use, so trying to watch overall mpg. Good to know I can expect to hit the EPA numbers at least.

I get about 15 mixed in the winter but my trips are all less than 10 miles. When I'm on the highway it gets about 18. Now that it's getting warmer I'm getting about 17.5 mixed and 20 hywy. Just got back from a business trip and got 20.9 overall with 60 to 70 mph on both 2 and 4 lane roads mixed with a little in town driving. In the summer I get about 16.5 with E85. Depending on the price difference, sometimes it is worth it.

Maybe I just have nice roads but even with my 4x4 I still get in the low 20s on the highway. If it wasnt for San Antonio's **** poor traffic light schedule I would see 18mpg in the city also. Im averaging around 16-17, so with a 2wd you should at least be in the 17s. The 5.0 is pretty good on gas.
