3.7 v6 outing
#11
Like the poster above me said, if you're in any way concerned about the 3.7 not getting the job done, just go ahead and step up to the 5.0 since it's only like $750. Some people report getting some pretty good gas mileage as well, so you might not be missing out on that either.
I personally wanted the 3.7 because I was so impressed when I rode in one of the 2011 v6 mustangs. That thing pulled harder than previous year GT's. I also test drove all of the trucks with the different engines, and I really couldn't notice much of a difference in the test drives. Granted I wasn't hauling/towing and didn't hammer down, but they all seemed to "cruise" about the same. For me, the 3.7 is more than sufficient for my needs, and this is coming from a guy that traded in a stage II Mazda Speed3 for this truck, so I know a little something about horsepower and torque. I'm glad Ford gave us so many different options to outfit these trucks. An XLT with the 3.7 and custom package is exactly what I needed!

I agree with hillwood. I too sold an '04 Lightning, then bought the 3.7. But if you feel better about the 5.0, get it. You'll be happier without the wonder. Now if I can just get used to the exhaust note of the 3.7.

Am a bit green with envy.......
at the reported 23 to 26 MPG reports... I have the 2011 3.7 and a 3.73 Rear in a 2011 Screw and can't seem to get above 22 -22.5..... and thats easing it down the hiway at 65 MPH.... RPM showing less than 2,000 ..... when it drifts above the 2,000 RPM mark, the MPG just drops below 21 ........ but I do get about 18.5-19 around town here ! I do believe that it might be the gas sometimes as when i use Shell, I seem to get better performance..... with Sams Club fillups, I drop down to 17 MPG around town....... guessing its the %'age of Ethanol???

I'm lucky to get 17 in town. I get about 15.5 with normal driving. I can do 17 if I baby it.
Around here there is no difference between most gas brands. It's the same no name tankers driving from the same fuel terminal.

With my 3.7 I am able to get close to 23 at 65, but city kills my gas I'm only getting about 14-15. I did notice a small increase after I put on a tonneau cover. For the first 2100 miles I've averaged 17.9 with about 65/35 highway to city.

The same here. I could follow the tanker from the Exxon station to the Shell, and then to Sam's. I think I was expecting to much from the 3.7 in terms of gas mileage at first. I have consigned myself now to the 14.5 to 15.5 in town, and the 21 to 22 average on the highway. I just keep reminding myself this truck is a monster of a land yatch, but rides like a Caddy with the room of a bus. It is by far the nicest Ford truck I have owned.

I'm very encouraged by some of the numbers I see here. I'm considering trading my Mazdaspeed3 for a new F150, but I've been a bit apprehensive due to gas cost. Not that the 'speed gets very good mileage; the EPA numbers are 18 city / 26 highway. I'm currently rehabbing (and living in) a two-flat in Chicago, and it's a bit of a chore using the Mazda as a work vehicle, although $250 spent at harbor freight got me a bit of help for the time being...
But like some other folks here, I don't need to haul that often. But it has been often enough that the trailer just isn't cutting it. Of course, it would be nice if the truck could tow one of these bad boys to the occasional out of state car show...
Think the 3.7 would be up to the task? I guess it's tricky trying to find that one perfect truck that does everything.

The 3.7 gets great gas mileage for the truck. And coming from a Speed like yourself, you won't be disappointed by the power from the v6. It also revs out to 7k, and runs 16's at the track. So it's no snail.
My personal recommendation to you would be to get a Supercrew due to the large backseat. Fold those seats up and you could literally put a dresser back there. Or a mattress for you and the lady friend.

Ford put turbo's on it instead of the 3.5L.......anyway never drove a 3.7L but looks like your city driving is no better than my 5.0L.............but the thing you posted about the fuel tankers just going from store to store is just wrong....every gas company advertises about how great their gas is....how shell cleans better than the next brand and chevron has techron in their gas.........looks like fraud to me.......maybe a need for new laws about getting what we pay for.

Definitely trade the speed! I just traded my gen2 ms3 in that handicap blue color for my 2011 f150 screw 3.7. I'm not sure how the 3.7 would do towing, but it does have more horsepower than the outgoing 4.6 v8's. Considering the fact that I see people towing huge trailers with their ford rangers and minivans, I'm sure you would be fine.

I guess I'll have to do a little more research about towing capacities. I don't want to buy the truck as a tow vehicle, as it would only be used maybe twice a year to pull the hot rods. Still, it would be pretty cool to put them both on a trailer and tow to Ohio with an ecoboost...
