Wait, what? Maybe I'm reading this wrong; it seems you're suggesting that you can't get the Max Tow option with a 5.0L, and I'm 99.999% sure my 2013 F150 XLT w/5.0L has the Max Tow option.

Please do correct me if I'm reading this wrong.

Nope. For 2011-12 Max tow was only eco and 6.2. Pretty sure it applies to 2013-14 too. You may have HD payload and regular tow package. But no Max tow.

So what's the difference between my 2011 5.0 that is rated to tow some 9,000lb and the same truck with the Ecoboost? 3,000 more towing rating. Why? I don't know. Same transmission and cooler. Same radiator, same front and rear axle.
For mine I'm convinced it is marketing. Ford wants to sell EcoBoost.

BTW I paid $27 for my XLT with 18k miles on it. Happy as a clam.

That's why it makes 412HP in a Mustang. Because it is a weaker engine.

Wink

I'm just an old school shade tree type of guy. Learned a lot from my Dad and by my own experiancs, reading, researching, etc., just as many people do. I'm sure he's talking about the internal structure/rigidity of the motor, elemental content of the metal, etc.? Also available gearing, bed length, wheel base all play a part in the ratings. The simplest explanation is that the 5.0 is a proven engine and was taken from the Mustang and fitted with cams, valve train, fuel system, etc. that are more suited for truck type duties. The V6 twin turbo Ecoboost was designed specifically as a truck engine, as is the 6.2. That is what I would surmise any way.......

True in my case

The mustang 5.0 is not the same. Close but not the sane. Having a few hundred extra RPM before redline helps. A stock mustang motor didn't have the torque

no max tow for the 5.0. MaxTow only came in 3.5 and 6.2. Wish it came in the 5.0, its Fords way of forcing people into the 3.5. I would be curious if maxtow was offered on all engines, would the 5.0 be the preferred engine. Would have been nice to have seen the figures. I for one would have opted for the 5.0 if it was offered. I like the EB MaxTow, great engine and good towing abilities.

I agree with many of the posts above. I wanted the 6.2, but found it hard to justify the 3k more. Then when I decided on the HD payload package as a 'must have, it isn't offered with the 6.2, so I went with the 5.0. If doing it over I would definitely get the 5.0 again. It has more power than I ever use even when hauling heavy. Those peak HP and TQ ratings don't mean anything unless you are running at those high RPMs all the time looking for more muscle. I find I don't need it, ever. Although I don't tow heavy trailers, I mostly just haul heavy loads. I do wind it up on occasion and enjoy the nimble power to pass, etc. And a nice surprise for me is that I get a mile or two better than rated MPG's.
