Default SSI 93-octane Raptor tune review

I got the opportunity to load up Raptor in 93 octane and let me tell you, this thing loves to run and I mean run hard.

The throttle: We are back to that quick tip in and instant spool. This isn't a snow tune from Shawn and that is obvious at the first push on the skinny pedal. You can get use to the response fairly quick, but if you get carried away it's going to eat the rear end out of the next two cars in front of you at a stop light. It's about 30% quicker on throttle tip-in than T5 was.

The power: I could tell it had more mid-range pull right away, and slightly quicker than T4 (it feels like about 20 more ft lbs of tq over T4). BUT I AM NOT DONE. After the tune settled into the truck this SOB pulls like a freight train off the line. Locked in 4x4 and the truck hoped sideways and went off like a rocket. Before the tune settled my wife was like, "It feels as fast as before". Well at around 15 miles on Raptor I had the chance to floor it from about a 10mph roll....and holy crap it'll spin the wheels halfway through 1st going into 2nd. The wife looked at me and said, "Wow, that took stomach away". My son said, "Ohhh, Daddy you are definitely going to get a ticket now". I was like geesh, jinx me why don't you.

It's a smooth delivery and the turbos sound awesome. It launches HARD off the line. This thing launched in 4wd might just pull your fillings out. My Tq pro 0-60 times were about 5.2secs....which is slower than T4----BUT THAT'S because you cannot get traction brake boosting to 2200rpms...it will spin all four tires and make you back out. It will also leave nice 4wd blackmark(s) for about 10 feet, lol.

I can't say it pulls any better up top than T4, but there is a lot of lowend and mid-range power.

Bottom Line: This tune is for the hardcore turbo loving, throttle banging, tire spinning gear heads. There's nothing wrong if you can't or don't want this. But if you even think you might.....JUMP ALL OVER THIS TUNE. It brings back that rocket ship feeling and is still smooth on the DD'er who wants a new toy!!!!

I haven't tried the new T-Rex tune which more of a street/performance tune than Raptor. The Raptor is a true performance tune. I'm holding about 19lbs across the board which is lower than my normal ~21 but it digs just as hard.

Good review Twinscrew . Great description of the new Raptor tune, it's just plain assed nasty. In comparison, the T Rex version has less initial throttle tip in and the tranny shifting is not quite as firm(can hardly even tell it shifts under normal driving), but the power is there as well. With either tune you can start in 2nd gear and still burn the tires with only an idle launch.

I'm loving the shifts of the raptor tune is a little less tame which I love. That lowend tq is addicting as is the turbo spool....

I had an Eclipse GST mess with me last night and I guess he figured it wasn't stock anymore because as soon as the turbos spooled he just shook his head. These things echo off of cars loud as heck when they spool since the truck has got about 11K miles on it.

Sounds fast. I want to see a video of 10ft black marks from a 4wd launch. Not at all saying it didn't happen but SSI has been touting doing 40mph rolling 4wd peels and I just would like to see it done. The 10mph peel halfway through second..was the truck in 2nd and downshifted to 1st? Just trying to wrap my head around the power you're describing.

That was a brake boost 4wd Launch at about 2400-2200 rpms held...I might be able to go back and get some pics.

I cannot break the 20's loose at 40mph....I can at about 22 mph roll in 2wd with traction control off. Yes it downshifted to 1st...that should read clearer to half way through 1st (upper portion) into second, lol. Now the T5 proto-typed BM I ran would turn em' over at around 30mph (maybe 28ish mph)....buuuuut that one was never released to anyone to my knowledge.

I think most of the guys touting 40mph rolling burnouts where in SCAB's and now are running MPT tunes, soooooo who knows about that one. I never saw proof or experienced that myself, lol.

Rodney touted the 40 mph 4x4 rolling peel. But thanks for the response. That tune sounds pretty nice. Thanks for the review.

I know that "I" cannot do this with my mods. I wish my truck would/could.

Rodney also is keeping the stock turbos cool and pushing them pretty hard...maybe that's a factor. I know that I can't do it...that I know 100%.
