2014 ECB Blown piston
2014 f150 ecoboost 42k miles blown piston can't get a answer from Ford house of why and I don't know either. Cylinder wall and everything was looked over motor was taken apart only thing that was replaced was the piston. No chips or programmers don't drive it any hard than any other ecoboost driver. Any one else had this problem or heard anything?
New question should I sell this truck?

I`m really surprised they didn`t replace it with a short or long block, since they only replace piston, I would trade it, I would be always wondering when the next one will let go, or you may never have that problem again. its crap shoot. lol

Once they do their work, trade in to them. If you go elsewhere, the vehicle history will kill the value since they will see this engine work.
Next, had you ever changed the spark plugs? With your mileage, they were overdue. Did your intercooler have the weep hole? I am betting that piston got a slug of condensate and this thing hydrolocked.

wait. what?
that's nothing I've ever seen before. what were the symptoms that you brought the truck in for? most likely it was just a bad casting that caused it to break and the odds of the other five pistons failing are incredibly slim. but you've still got 18k left of powertrain warranty so drive it hard and see if you can get anything else to act up while you're still covered. if not, it's probably fine.

Looks like a one-off bad casting. I highly doubt it was a hydro lock issue as it would have been a rod failure.
Very surprised that they didn't do a full rebuild. Piston pieces could have made it to a few locations IF they were small enough. I would be asking how familiar they are with rebuilding this engine and what they do to ensure that contaminants are not going to still be floating around when they put it back together. Relying on the oil filter is not a good answer...
I agree that you have a few miles left on the warranty in case there is another issue, but down time sucks. If they don't give you a warm and fuzzy feeling about the fix, I would consider trading it in and moving on.
Were you running good fuel? Sometimes detonation can cause skirt failure.

OP posted on other forums too and never replied, would be nice to get some more info.
What piston number was it? What symptoms did you have? Loud constant knocking ? . . . . .

usually run 91 in it . it was piston 1. heard a tick after a 2 hour drive. as you accelerated the tick would accelerate also. diagnosis was just the piston was broke. also i have no changed the spark plugs and the ticket it still open at the ford house and i dont know if they changed them out or not.

The same thing happened to my mom's 2013 ecoboost with around 40,000 miles. It started ticking like crazy and we took it to a Ford dealer and they said piston #1 was cracked and they got a new long block for it. The dealer said they have never seen anything like it but it sounds like this isn't the first time it's happened.
