Default 2013 FX4 5.0 Blue Smoke/Oil Consumption

Hello all,

I purchased a 2013 FX4 5.0 in April. I was somewhat irresponsible and honestly I didn't check the oil before the first change. I had it changed at 2900 miles when I had to take it in for a warranty job on a squeak in the door. I now have 3900 miles on it, so 1000 since the very first oil change. I don't drive it very often, as I have an older 4x4 s-10 I use on the farm daily and the new truck stays in the garage a lot.

This morning, the new truck was actually outside overnight and it got pretty cold here last night, near 20 degrees. I was gonna move the new truck in the garage, so I looked out the window and started it with the remote start. What I saw next was very disturbing. When the truck started, I saw a decent sized cloud of blue smoke come out of the exhaust immediately upon startup. Then nothing came out, followed by steam a short time later. Immediately I was pissed, wanting to know why my brand new $45,000 truck is burning oil. I shut the truck off and let it sit for about an hour, then I went out and checked the oil. I saw that the oil level was about halfway between the full and add marks. Now I can't be certain that the dealer made sure it was completely full when they changed the oil, but I'm assuming they did. Can anyone explain this? Why in the world would my brand new truck be smoking blue and potentially burning oil???

I did leave the truck outside the rest of the afternoon and started it again about 4 hours after the blue smoke incident. This time I saw no blue smoke at all come out of the exhaust. I read some posts on here where people with the 2011's had some issues and said that once they got around 10k miles the oil consumption started. But I find the fact that I paid $45k for a truck to burn oil.

Any help, advice, or experiences would be greatly appreciated!

Default Oil Consumption

Believe it or not every manufacturer considers 1 qt. every 1500 miles as normal operation. Please don't use synthetic oil until your engine breaks in or it will use oil and it will be harder for your rings to seat. I would give it to 7500k before I would be concerned.

just changed my oil in my 2013 5.0 with 7.7 gts and the level was a tad over half way between the marks. i do not think yours is using oil, don't know how close they come to measuring how much oil they put in. one reason i change the oil myself to see where the oil line on my dipstick, better to be a little low than overfill it. the owners manual has a warning of over filling will cause damage. your cats usally burn off oil and other impurities from gas. just chill out, probably nothing. i don't take my truck in for anything i can fix that cost under $50, not worth the time to take it in and have somebody work on my truck that knows less than me. lube techs in my area are paid around $9 an hour.

5.0's in the mustang when new consume TONS of oil, like more than 1 quart in a 1000 miles. I lost my 5.0 (mustang) engine after a 2,000 miles road trip. because it went low on oil. Technician said it was common and not the first one he'd replaced before 5,000.

The solution is to just keep checking the oil and refilling. After about 5-7k miles it slows down. Something with the piston seating (said the tech.) My next 5.0 consumed alot of oil too, and did quit after about 1,000 miles.

While mine never consumed any oil new, many report that this engine does until proper seating occurs. You needed to get the engine hot, and run it the full rpm band at WOT a few tunes here and there to break in the engine right. After 10,000 miles no one reports any oil burning.

As for the smoke, on cold mornings, most self start engines run alot of fuel to get a quicker initial combustion. My Dodge did this on child mornings first start. Ran really rich until it warned up. Could be a little extra fuel burning off.
