Default 2011 5.0L F-150 hard starting

Hi guys,

I recently bought a 2011 F150 (5.0L) and for the first couple months it was running fine, but lately (about a week now) it seems like the engine is hard to start and I'm trying to figure out why. It's been pretty warm here in Northern California so I wondered if that could be part of it, but it's just not consistent. It seems like when it's been sitting for awhile is when this issue happens. Engine turns over strong but it takes much, much longer than usual for engine to start up. But once it starts it runs smooth and seems fine. If I turn the engine off and start it again, it seems to start as I'd expect. And the hard starting doesn't happen all the time but definitely seems to have become recurrent.

I've done some Google searching and haven't found much to go by; I've seen people mention the fuel pump, the fuel pump control module, and a weak battery but their symptoms just don't seem to match mine. So, I thought I'd post and ask if anyone has had similar issues. If it is something like the fuel pump, shouldn't I notice performance degrading when driving? If it is the fuel pump, should symptoms get worse and worse? I have no check engine light or warnings, but should I check for codes anyway? Are there other components I should be checking? Thanks for any help!

Hi defcon.klaxon,

I recommend letting the certified techs at your local dealership take a look. Shoot me a PM with your current mileage; I'll see how I can assist.

Question

Sounds as if you may have a slow fuel system leak-down. MEANING: For some reason the fuel pressure is not being maintained after turning-off the ignition.

Fuel pump / fuel pressure regulator / injector / etc..

Try turning-on the ignition (without starting the engine) and waiting a few seconds for the fuel pump to build pressure/prime and then start the engine.

Interesting idea. Perhaps I could attach a fuel pressure gauge to the rail and let it sit overnight and see if there's any change?

Yeah could be many things at this point. I will look into monitoring fuel pressure and go from there.

Will do, and will keep a little notebook around to see if there's a pattern. Thanks!
