2013 EcoBoost oil cap inspection @ 8500 Km - Yellow stuff is back!
Hey folks,
I'm not a pro mecanic but I can do basic stuff myself and always keep an eye at everything runs good. Here is my intro thread for more info on me and my truck
https://www.f150forum.com/f3/our-new...-touch-247663/
I already unmounted and checked for water in my CAC @ 7000 Km, reaveling ~ 1oz of cocktail and oily deposit inside. More info and video here:
https://www.f150forum.com/f70/water-...emoval-248485/
Now today after reading all the latest post in the "fix for condensation" thread, dcfluid was speaking about a custom made oil cap vent... so I decided to check mine too right away.
I have 8500 Km, everything stock neither NO drain hole in intercooler and I'm running Pennzoil Ultra 5W-30 since the 5000 Km mark.

So what do you thing ? Nothing ? Show this to dealer ?
Do a "custom" oil cap vent too or get the RX Performance oil cap filter ?
I want to keep this truck for the next 8-10 years, short commuting, casual trip and RV towing.
Climate is rough here, going -40C to +40C all year around.

According to ford its because of the cold climate and short trips.

Mine did that when it was cold out and I short tripped. Now that it's warmer it's gone away. Google it and you'll see they all do it, all the way back to the 4.6/5.3.

What does the oil on the dip stick look like? The moisture likes to accumulate at the top of the engine. As long as it isn't accumulating in the actual oil,it is probably fine. If the oil on the stick looks like that, well.....no bueno
But get an oil analysis done to be sure. I've seen that kind of thing on oil caps for years on motors running 200,000+ miles with no apparent harm.
Probably would shorten the oil change interval in winter too and run full synthetic.
Otherwise if it bugs you a catch can is the best bet to help evacuate the crank case faster. But be prepared to empty after every few hours of driving in winter. More often if you do lots of short trips.

Oil on dipstick is crystal clear and like said, running Pennzoil Ultra since 5000 Km.
I tought 1 sec of a coolant leak... happens to me with my 92 Dodge Shadow during an hot summer and oil cap was all yellow/white...
And that's correct for short trip, it was exactly this last winter. My girlfriend is driving it weekdays and lots of start/stop cycle for kids to daycare, school and her work.
I used the block heater everytime it was -17C or less and remote start every morning for 2-5 min, used to have a Diesel!
Hopefully, this is nothing like said... I may consider the catch can for next winter or get a winter beater/commuter if she want to drive it!!

Update: PCV tube to CAC almost clean ?!?
24h after inspecting the oil cap, I decided to look at the PCV tube that goes to the CAC...
Guess what, this tube is almost clean ??? Here's the pics:
I tought that, once engine off, some of the vapors would goes out in this PCV tube, consende and accumulate down at the CAC out in liquid and/or solid form... explaining part of the problem according to some.
But looking at the traces found in the PCV tube right now and in my CAC last month (see my other post), I don't think they goes there that much right ? Nothing vs the oil cap at least
I guess they would go as high as possible in the valve cover, so the oil tube and condense there... not going in the CAC bottom.
Maybe there is a one-way valve in that PCV hose too so when engine off it's blocked ?
Right now since a week is -5C over night and +5C over day... perfect for condensation. I will check the oil cap and the PCV tube often and let you know if the situation get worst.
Just to share even if it means nothing !
Ok time to see Canadiens kicks Tampa Bay's ***!!!
