Default 2013 5.0 xlt vs. 2001 5.4 xlt

Interesting reads on here and I'm sure if I had more time to dig around I'd probably find that someone has already asked the question but does anyone know if the 2013 5.0 can be chipped? Or, if the shift points can be changed? This pooch of a truck is in 5th gear at 30 MPH! what is that all about Ford? And bogs down bad between 2nd and 3rd. It's embarrasing when my GM friends hear it. I bought a new extended cab 4x4 with the 5.4 in it in 2001. I have since given that truck to my son and bought a new 2013 S crew 4x4 xlt. That 5.4 is still running and pulling like a champ after 145,000 miles. I am sorely disappointed in this 2013 truck. While it has tons of leg room and rides great, I find myself wondering if there is a hamster wheel under the hood. There is no comparison to the two motors. The 5.0 is severly underpowered for this truck and I have no doubt the eco boost is also. Why the downsize? If I wanted a car I would have bought one. I need power in my trucks. Say what they want, the HP is no where near the same between these motors. Bring back the 5.4 Ford!

@ 260 hp and 350# tq. that 5.0 will out run your old truck quickly. i went from an 06 5.4 3V, 4 spd to my 11 5.0,4V, 6 spd and havent looked back. yes there are "tuners" who will tune your truck not so much chip any more.

Google f150 tuning, SSI, MPT, 5 Star...ect rep. tuners who use SCT to flash. I'd never want my 5.4 back over my 5.0!

The motor isn't under powered ford just tuned the transmission like crap for "economy" go to stage3motorsports.com and pick you up a SCT with 5star tunes. You should be plenty happy with that.

Wow. This is interesting. Severely underpowered? 5th gear by 30 mph is pretty telling that it has the guts to pull that gear at a low speed. I've had several 5.4's. An 03 F150 screw, 04 F250, 1 2v expedition and 1 3v expedition. Not arguing they are good motors. I'm actually more a fan of the 2v. I've also had a 2012 fx4 5.0 and now a 2014 fx4 Ecoboost. Underpowered is not what i experienced. My 5.0 was a beast. MY GM buddies ogled at the power compared to their 5.3's and even a couple coworkers with Hemi's gained respect. I can't say how as I can't say what the road in "Mexico" was called. You gained 100 hp and 30lbft over your 5.4 AND gained 2 gears in the trans. Have you actually opened it up?
I will say it has a different feel. The 2v had an accelerator cable and is responsive. Builds good power early but has the lungs hanging out by 4500. The 5.0 just keeps building power. Yes you can tune and yes you will gain shifting improvements. Lots of reading on here.
And for the record, the EB is not underpowered. 😉

No comparison between the two engines even un tuned. Get an sct x4 with a custom tune and miles of smiles are all you will have.

Yup I'm tuned and the difference is amazing.

I've got to say I don't totally disagree with the OP. The 5.0 is really impressive beyond 3k rpm. Before 3k rpm, it isn't all that, as far as "seat of the pants" feel. The 5.4 is the exact opposite. 2-4k rpm it feels stout. Beyond that, there's not much more power to be had. So while the 5.0 will walk away and leave the 5.4 in a drag race, in daily driving below 3k rpm, the 5.4 feels stouter. The six speed trans makes both of them feel doggy to me. They shift before the engines really making power unless you're really on the gas pedal (or tuned I guess, which I don't do). I'd like to see hp/torque graphs for both. I'd imagine the 5.4 has more power at lower rpm, and a whole heap less beyond 3k rpm or so.

Many say the 5.4 has more torque below 2k rpm. Maybe you feel this too. The 5.0 gets it's power in high rpms. It is a. Us tang motor after all... But that said in mid rpms it should start to outperform the 5.4. If you keep rpms down, then the ecoboost would be a better match...

Also a tune could greatly help you. It helped on my 5.4 but much better improvement on the new motors. Plays the 5.0 should bet you far better mpg.

Haha, if the OP is old enough to have kids that drive and is still worried about what his "GM friends" think, well, ... sounds like an issue that won't be fixed with a chipped 5.0!

Good luck to ya, though!
