Torque convertors do crack loose, and not having clean oil is suspect of incompetence. Trouble Houston ?

Hi Joe Welch and DeuceRooster,

I'll be happy to step in here and do what I can to assist. Shoot a PM my way with your details and I'll investigate some ways to help. I'll need your full name, best daytime phone number, VIN, mileage, and servicing dealership.

Crystal

Thank you Crystal. I'm still currently very satisfied with my truck. I'm going to give the engine a bit of time/mileage as I believe it's the common nature of the 5.0 but I truly appreciate your willingness to assist and if a problem arises from the ticking I will contact you. Thank you so much for your presence here on the forum.

There is a check valve in the FL500 motorcraft filter. I had a 5.0 mustang and now the F150 and have not had a problem with knocks. Use a good synthetic too. Good luck!

Thanks everyone, and thank you Crystal. I took it to the dealership, and it was of course, running like a sewing machine. It hasn't done the ticking thing in a few days. I am seriously thinking about doing a six filter and 7.7 quarts of mobil one 10W30 full synthetic though.

I'd stick with 5w20 but yes to Mobil 1

Your knock will undoubtedly get worse if you put in 10w30. These engines are made with tight tolerances, hence the 5w20 requirement.

I do believe that on my next change I'm switching to ENOS or MOTUL brand oil. Still going to have the dealer do the oil change and use the OEM filter however just to help with documentation for a warranty claim (if ever needed) I don't drive that much so the offset of the more expensive oil isn't that much for me. I'll report back as to if switching brands helps with the noise.

10w-30 might be a bit thick but with the 5w-20... the consensus seems to be that it chosen to reduce load on the engine for cafe standards and not because of tight tolerances. even if you run a different oil than spec and you have an issue, the dealer has to prove that the thicker than recommended oil caused the issue per the Magnusson Moss Act.

However before taking it I'm for the first oil change (at a Ford dealer) I had read several threads on the Mustang variant of this engine having the exact same issue so I was somewhat expecting it. Seems that after about 15k miles the noise went away in a lot of cases and others said that after switching brands of oil to Mobil 1 or Pennzoil that the ticking went away. I read a thread where supposedly a Ford engineer had told one customer that the trucks leave the factory with an additive in the oil to quieten down the engines....but of course that's highly questionable. Really hard to separate the truth from the here say but it is a documented issue across several different forums. Mine is only aight tick in and if it doesn't get worse than I'm not concerned with it really. I may try changing to a different brand of oil just to see but that's about it. However is I did have a describable "knock" yes I would be highly concerned.
Break in oil does contain metal additives that assist in the engine break in process. The purpose of the additives is not to quiet the engines but the engines running quieter may be a result of the additives. I don't know if manufacturers like Ford still use break on oil but it's possible.
