21138 AUTO TRANS - MERCON LV FLUID COLOR
EQUIPPED WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FACTORY FILLED WITH MERCON LV FLUID (PART # XT-10-QLV), MAY EXHIBIT DARK COLORED TRANS FLUID THAT MAY LOOK BURNT IN APPEARANCE. THIS IS A NORMAL CHARACTERISTIC OF THIS FLUID AND WILL NOT AFFECT TRANSMISSION FUNCTION OR DURABILITY. THE MERCON LV FLUID IS A DEEP RED COLOR, COMPARED TO CONVENTIONAL MERCON V BRIGHT RED FLUID, AND THE COLOR NATURALLY DARKENS AT RELATIVELY LOW MILEAGE. IN SOME CASES, THE FLUID MAY APPEAR TO HAVE A GREEN TINT DUE TO DYE USED TO CHECK FOR LEAKS AT THE ASSEMBLY PLANT. TRANS FLUID COLOR SHOULD NOT BE USED AS SOLE INDICATOR FOR TRANSMISSION REPAIRS. REFER TO THE CORRECT VEHICLE AND MODEL YEAR WORKSHOP MANUAL AND/OR MAINTENANCE GUIDE FOR DIAGNOSTICS, REPAIRS, AND/OR SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE.
So use you nose? Mercon and Mercon V start to get a burt smell as they darken.

so you nose?? but I know that the the other fluids in tranny`s are suppose to be bright red, but what I posted was bulletin or statement from Ford about the color of the Mercon LV fluid that it changes color pretty fast to the darker color which according to ford is supposed to be normal, but I changed mine anyways

Here is the insides of the motorcraft filter. Not much to it.The filter I am holding up is thin. you can see my pinky shadow through it easily.

I am not a scientist but I think fords idea of letting the tranny fluid get dark is ok is a crock. The transmission fluid is a replaceable part. I think hands down this tranny is better then the 4r75 in my last truck any day.

In my opinion the type LV fluid is doing a great job. Like I said in my original post the fluid did not have a strong burn smell. It had not much of a smell but was dirty. Very thick black.

I work 7 days a week from 4 am til the job is done so my posting has been from my phone, typos are expected lol. I meant use your nose as in smell the fluid. Older transmission fluids would usually change smell as the color changed but I agree with the OP that if the color changes, the fluid has changed (or been contaminated).

I bought some LV for some tranny work. Opened a bottle at the parts store and smelled it (brand new). The clerk agreed. It smells burnt from the manufacturer.
