I did take mine in to have it checked for a exhaust leak on the passenger side and the tech said he couldn't find anything leaking. I asked him about the 5.0 knock and he said they have had zero in for the cylinder wall distortion and said he never heard of it. He did say he had done only one for the TSB timing chain tensioner too. He said that the cold weather can produce what he called piston slap from the type of pistons used in the 5.0's. He said some of the older 4.6's did that. I told him that there were quite a few videos of late 2011 and early 2012's that developed a distinct knock. He said if mine does and it is constant to bring it in and they can scope it. I definitely will and I am going to drive my truck pretty normal as if something is wrong I want to find out before my time or 60K miles hit in the next 2 years.

Will be going up to the mountains this weekend so Ill get a better listen when its hot. But right now it sounds like a different engine.

Sorry for the late update. Truck still sounds great. Haven't heard the tick or knock even after the long drive up. The whole engine sounds much better ,, but I'm kind of confused on how the timing chain tensioner and water pump could make the noises I was hearing and the locations I scoped them at but I'm not an expert so I'll not question how right now and just enjoy. Back to loving this truck.

Default Back at the dealership

Truck is back at the dealership. Day three today.

They called earlier and said they cannot hear ANYTHING let alone anything that would be out of the ordinary.

I took this video the day I dropped it off and seems to sound like the others who have had success resolving this issue.

I tried youtube but for some reason the video wouldn't process so I'm trying Dropbox.

That sounds exactly like mine right now , but it's always loudest with more ticking tapping sounds for the first couple hundred miles right after an oil change then starts to quiet down some
how many miles on that oil when you took the video?
They already replaced the timing chain tensioner and water pump on mine both were making noises but really didn't help with the ticking and tapping.
Extremely frustrating.

Timing chain tensioner replaced last year and not sure about the water pump.

I think I have about 1000 miles since last oil change. I expect a call today and have already been in touch with Ford Regional rep though he explained that he cannot MAKE the dealership do anything.

If I get this resolved, I will post a before and after video for others to compare.

Default A quiet 5.0 video

Here's a video that I took of a 2015 F150 5.0 engine with less than 10 miles on the odometer. I'd call this one "normal" and quiet.

Default Mine knocks too and uses oil

My 2011 is knocking just like the one in the video. It's also using a qt. every 2000 miles. It's up near 50k miles now but I took it in to the dealer previously for the noise only at around 25,000 miles and they said it was an injector noise. After seeing these threads I'll have to push a little harder. Heck, my 2008 Focus has 170k miles and doesn't use any oil in between oil changes at 7500 mile intervals. I'll be talking to the dealer on Monday for sure.

Lew, happy to hear that your dealer took care of the knock issue. You said they installed a "new" block. Was it a factory new short block or re-manufactured short block? According to my dealer, if the truck has more than 12K miles it will get a re-manufactured short block. I am curious if Ford has made any changes to correct the cylinder distortion so those with replacement blocks won't have the same problem again. I wish you the best with your new block.
