Here is a collection of the cold start noises my truck has made October 21 - 24 2014 this is after the dealer has said they will fix, still waiting on them to organize the logistics.

In my situation I believe the previous owner did two things wrong...

1. Likely used quickie oil changes with manufacturer approved oil/filters.
2. Likely actually followed Fords recommended intervals of 10,000 - 16,000km.

Either way it's not my problem. It's Ford's problem. I bought this truck from a Ford dealer (who leased it new) it has remaining power train warranty and I have a 5 year PremiumCare ESP.

Nobody can tell me this noise isn't causing internal damage in my engine without inspecting it thoroughly.

Default latest update

Weeks ago, I wrote in that my 2012 eco has timing chain noises. They are not as loud as others on this site but noticeable for about 1-2 seconds first thing in the morning.

Well after posting my noises and talking to the service manager they went away! lol

They finally came back and I left my truck for a cold start at our local ford dealership yesterday. They confirmed the noises being timing chains and they are tearing down the engine on Monday to see what else????

Who knew that I would catch this with less than 1000km left in the power train warranty? wow.

I will update when I have more info.

I betting the free movement of the crank CCW and CW is like an inch. Better than 15 Degrees with a bad adjuster/tensioner. Look for a damaged/worn/plugged problem oiler/blown seal, believe the oil passed thru the adjuster to the tensioner on the 3.5L. There has been plenty of evidence of a blown oil filters internal material/installed over tightened, causing the problems with cam adjusters.

TSB will apply all the way up to the 14's. They just don't have enough miles on them.

Amsoil used to sell an oil precharger. It pre pressurized the lube system before startup. I went to order one to help with this problem, but found out they stopped selling them. It wouldn't stop the chain stretch, but it may have prevented the rattle and subsequent damage.

I'm going to use reason for a minute. If one drives and uses his F150 like a car why would he need to have 5W30. The EB was originally designed for passenger car use and 5W20 oil to flow and lubricate quickly. One should only need heavier oil to protect the crank and rods under heavy loads, like towing a camper or heavy loads. Of course the warranty thing ?

I think I'd like to know more about the root cause before throwing parts at this problem. There are speculations of numerous causes, but there reality could be any number of issues from a bad set of parts to a inadequate design.
