2011 ecoboost noise on start up
#41
I recently started for the first time getting the clattering noise on cold startup. I've been using valvoline oil and filters, which have the check valve. However, after talking to the Ford house, I changed the oil & filter and went with motorcraft supplies per the owners manual. 5 cold starts later and the noise hasn't returned. I was about 5K into the previous oil change cycle.

I started to have this same issue a few months ago. 11' XLT ecoboost w/60k. I have used the Motorcraft oil filter per manual and Pennzoil Platinum Synthetic since Ive owned it and change it at 7,000 mile intervals or at about 30% oil life.

That sucks man, I hope they get it sorted out for you and get it fixed. I have a 2011 Eco with 31 K miles and no problems so far(knock on wood). I am starting to wonder though if the extra power is really worth all the potential issues that are starting to show up at higher mileages. Keep us posted.

my two cents worth.13 fx4 1065kms on it .it to makes the rattleing noise on start up for a second or two.talked to service manager about this he said he put a flight recorder box on one of the trucks.and it turned out to be cam sencors.that's what I was told.

ive noticed that the vast majority seem to have an 2011 ecoboost. suggest there may be issues with that year (not surprising seeing as it was the first year for the eco in the f150).

I thought I'd chime in with my experience. I had the exact same sound posted a few pages back on my 2011 Ecoboost. It started out quiet and frequent, then it got loud and infrequent. I took it to the dealer and they were able to re-create the problem perfectly, and their sophisticated sound equipment pointed to somewhere near the timing chain, likely a bad tensioner, just like my damn 05 5.4. Seems to be a thing that Ford just can't get right. So Ford of Canada wanted to tear down the engine and investigate further with an engineer before approving repairs, which would've prolonged my plans to get rid of the truck since it was already listed. I said no and sold the truck a day later.
Good luck to everyone who's having this issue.
