It sounds like its a little bit longer than it has been sounding. I'm glad were in this together and nobody is fighting or diagnosing this alone.
Sometimes it starts sooner or later in the start cycle. There have been a few times when it was also very faint and lasted only a very short time, less than a 1/2 second.

I've given up on Ford Canada for now I'm dealing directly with the dealership that sold me the truck. This is a big inconvenience as there is a body of water between us with additional travel time and expense involved as they are on the mainland.

They seem eager to want to take a look but if that entails more of the same answers then I am not really interested in the additional hassle it will be for me and would prefer to deal locally.

I feel sick about this vehicle purchase every morning

This is puzzling...if it's the timing chain then the noise should be constant or at least cyclical as the chain rotates. Since this only happens at start up, I wonder if it isn't something else internal to the engine.

Yes, indeed. After getting the below email back from the selling dealer today it looks like I just need to drive this truck until it dies and hopefully it's within my warranty period.

XXXX,

As I explained earlier, we as dealers must follow direction from Ford and if the Ford Engineering team has declined teardown the same result would be given to our service department. Unfortunately Hallmark Ford cannot go outside these guidelines under any circumstances.

As you had mentioned to me Ford denied teardown as there is presently no fix for this concern. I will continue to monitor the Ford web site to see if there are any updates on this concern.

I am sorry but I cannot assist you any further at this time.

XXXX XXXXXX
Serice(sic) Manager
Hallmark Ford Sales Ltd.

The dealer I bought this truck from was

Hallmark Ford Sales Ltd in Surrey BC
888-693-9021
604-584-1222

You can listen to my videos and come to your own conclusion if this issue developed overnight when I took delivery or was likely present for the duration of their marketing of and ultimate sale of the vehicle to myself.

I'm finding my situation pretty odd. For the past month I've been getting that noise every single morning, sometimes its so loud and long it makes me heart hurt a little, and I also mentioned in previous posts that I was having misfires in Cylinder 4 (and cylinder 6 about 3,000 miles ago).

I normally get my oil changed by a reputable shop here in town but I decided to be the bearded man that I am and change it myself this time. I put in Mobil 1 Full Synthetic and the oil filter that our manuals call for (and noticed that the shop had a different filter on there, and also stripped my drain plug)... Well yesterday morning I went to record the start up and to my surprise, no noise at all. Later in the day, the check engine light went out in its own. This morning I went to record on startup, and it made the noise, but for only maybe 1/10th of a second. Truck still idles a little rough but seems to be working a little better. I can't imagine that being the root of the issue we are having, because I'm confident a lot of you take care of your trucks and put on the right oil filter and some good oil, but it seems to have helped my truck out a little.

I still have my appointment in Tuesday with the dealership, and now I'm worried they aren't going to be able to replicate the issue now. I know there's still an issue present though. I guess time will tell. I'll continue to check this forum and will provide updates with my truck.

My truck is running Ford motorcraft oil/filter.

After hearing the sound every day for almost a month, the past two days I have been trying to get a under hood video, but it has gone quiet. Only things I did differently was have the hood open, removed the plastic engine cover and started the truck from the ignition. Every time it made the noise previously the hood was closed and it was started with remote start. The amount of time it sat over night is the same and weather has been very consistent.

Will try remote start tomorrow but not sure why that would make a difference.

Yeah, that's weird. My truck will make the noise with or without the remote start. I usually do it with the key in ignition and my camera resting on the battery but for some of the doubters and for Ford I have taken recordings from many different camera angles.

Hood open, plastic sound deadener cover off and no rattle. That's interesting if it holds up.

The dealer forgot to reinstall mine once and set it by the wall in his bay. I thought the motor sounded great and then I raised my hood to check the oil and wall-0ahh. Tech found it for me a couple weeks later.

A couple of consistently repeatable points to make note of, at least from my experience the past year with this noise:

- Cold start of at least 8-12 hours required to have the noise audible.
- The longer the truck sits, the worse the noise becomes (longest cold soak was 5 full days, noise was very loud and lasted about 3 seconds.)

- Parking on an incline seems to worsen symptoms (park on incline either way overnight or longer, noise will be worse than parking on level surface of same timeframe. Engine side higher appears to be the worst.)

- Castrol EDGE 5W30 black bottle seems to have helped reduce occurrence of the noise, that or perhaps the interfering parts have worn through each other...
