2011 ecoboost noise on start up
#431
Nope, stopped at a dealership in a smaller town on my way home to get the CEL read. Earliest appt available for them was also Tuesday. The CEL was in fact a misfire, but a different cylinder this time.
I'm thinking about getting an appointment with that dealership anyways. I talked to them about the noise issue on start-up which this thread is about and the mechanic pointed at another F-150 sitting outside the shop and said that it had the exact same problem as everybody else here. He said they replaced the timing chain and tensioner and it hasn't fixed the problem. The mech just wants to replace the whole motor in that truck but Ford hasn't authorized them to do so yet. I think I would feel more comfortable at the dealership since they are currently already dealing with a truck with the same issue, rather than possibly getting the run around by the dealership here in my town.

Hey just got a response back at 4:30 from my dealership saying ford Canada has informed them to not go any further at attempting to fix the problem's right now and that they were aware of the issue though and will notify them once a solution has been found. My service advisor and the shop foreman have said they are going to try one more thing, disconnecting the vvt module and see if it makes any difference before they give it back to me to impatiently wait for them to call with the fix if it ever gets on. I'll let you all know asap.

Yeah, like I said, I previously had the issue with misfires at 47k miles but that was under hard acceleration. The CEL would blink, I wasn't able to give the truck any gas at all, felt like the motor was going to shake right out of the truck. Had to coast to the side of the road, turn the engine off, turn it back on, and the issue went away, until I hit the accelerator too hard again.
No the misfires seem to be happening at low RPMs and smooth out at higher RPMs. Had to pass a vehicle at lunch today and the truck had no issue with the acceleration or misfires. When I get off location today I'll swing by Auto Zone in town and see what the code is and will post it here. I called the dealership to get an appointment, lady said she was going to have an advisor call me back to set it up.
In curious if these are two seperate issues that are giving me a headache or if they related somehow. Either way my engine is not acting the way it should. These trucks are truly good trucks, when they work the way they're supposed to.
Edit: sorry for misspellings, my thumbs are trying to adjust to this new phone

I am a sales manager, and have a good relationship with several of the experienced techs. We have not really had any complaints at our facility regarding the noise so when I heard the noise on mine a few times I googled it and saw the timing chain issue. So I went back to the shop duplicated the noise and they did not think it was timing chain because it is only at start up. We sent in a note to hotline and response was most likely vacuum pump, they were replacing a lot of them and they are on back order. My noise and symptoms were exact match to bad vacuum pump. Mine doesn't do it every time and is inconsistant, a timing chain issue should be somewhat consistent and I, along with other mechanics think that it should not only be for a few moments at start up with timing chain issue. I'm not saying it is not an issue or they are all vacuum pumps but I had myself convinced in 10 mins online researching that I had timing chain issues, when in actuality I did not. We have performed very few repairs on the ecoboost trucks at our facility, and if this was that big of an issue I feel like I would have seen several by now. Just my opinion.

Unless you have a hearing issue (no offense if you do) they are very different noises and several truck owners have already had Ford dealers confirm this issue.

I have not tuned my truck, the only thing I've done to it is put in some better speakers. I've been thinking about getting a tuner with a tow tune, but have yet to do that, I'm too afraid to pull anything until this all gets situated.
Mine makes the noise every single morning, some days are worse than others. Got a better recording this morning but the sound only lasted for about a second... there are some mornings it'll last for 3-5 seconds.
Here is my video from this morning though:
When I got my CEL read yesterday on the way home from work, they told me it was a misfiring cylinder, but a different one from last time. They reset the CEL and I drove home. Last night I changed my oil and oil filter, turned the truck on to make sure all was well, and it was. This morning when I started her up, I got that noise in the video and the CEL is back on. It seems as though the cylinder misfires in the morning when I fire up the engine. I'll stop after work again today to confirm it was the same cylinder as yesterday.

If it is misfiring they should 100% be changine the plug and coil on that cylinder. Don't let them eff you around by just resetting the code.

They can't get my truck in until Tuesday, I just stopped in to get the code read, and the plugs and coils are both consumables, so that'll come out of my pocket. I replaced all 6 plugs about 3,000 miles ago so it has to be the coils failing on me, and those things are what, $85 a pop? I would like to think that they wouldn't be failing at 51,000 miles
