Well, I let my truck sit from last Thursday at 5 PM or so to Monday morning at 7 AM. Temperatures were cooler, but not cold, and it seems to have made the rattle very briefly at startup. Hasn't done it since, so I'm not sure 100% and honestly hoping it's the vacuum pump instead considering I'm at 51k on the truck. So I've got 9k miles or so to get it covered under the power train warranty.

Chain rattle is *immediately* at startup and usually goes away quickly...

Vacuum pump noise happens at other times and sounds quite a bit different. Check the videos on youtube.

I have, and from the videos it sounds identical to the timing chain and not the vacuum pump but you know how it is listening to videos sometimes. I guess that answer that.

It sounds like I need to let it sit for 4-5 days again, and fire it up. But I guess it needs to be out far enough for the dealer to measure the change and do the fix?

Ugh, I hate the idea that I might have a problem going bad under warranty but not fixable due to some arbitrary number.

It's super easy to diagnose the bad vac pump. Start your truck let it idle a minute or two. Press your brake pedal down 5+ times. If your vac pump is bad you will hear it screaming while it builds vacuum.

Doesn't cost them, costs ford. I have a little issue with how the TSB is written. It states "does the customer state a ticking/tapping or rattle type noise occurs from the top front cover area of the engine upon
initial cold start-up that lasts for 2-5 seconds after a cold soak of 6 or more hours?" If yes the next step is Replace all VCT's.

There is nothing there stating they have to verify.

Based on my understanding, there's opportunity cost to doing warranty work. It uses shop time, but pays at a lower rate than customers (in that they pay less than book for the same work). So in essence, warranty work is a loss leader situation at a dealerships and is done as part of keeping the franchise rights.

I understand warranty work sucks for the dealer, but they look better and possibly make more sales. This F150 "Rattle at Start Up" wonder of engineering would be great if they would have figured it out within the first couple of years. It is really going to make people wonder about this motor... My first Ford. I heard great things. It really will be a great motor someday; just sucks I missed the warranty

Mine hasn't rattled once in the last 5300 miles...probably rattled 3 times all summer. Last summer it would rattle every day. This doesn't mean maybe the timing isn't off or it didn't cause damage...but the catch can taking all the contamination out of the oil has made it almost completely disappear. Certainly wish I would have installed one earlier in my trucks lifetime.
