2011 ecoboost noise on start up

If you are short on time, then you can't waste any playing dealer games. Often the dealer will return the truck "unable to replicate complaint". That's because the started the truck, drove it into the service bay and then tried to listen for the noise. Force them to take the truck overnight, but you keep the keys. Go back the next day and meet the tech at the truck. You start while he's under the hood. He'll hear the noise and the repair should move forward. Demand the phasers get replaced. All 4!
Ford has a warranty on their repairs and they should give you a credit for misdiagnosing the problem. Of course they'll say those were other problems they had to fix. They always say that. They'll also tell you they've never heard of EB timing chain problems!

My 2013 started doing this rattle a few weeks ago. It did it every morning for a good two weeks and now it hasn't done it for the last week. I have a 4 yr/125k ESP warranty on it and I just rolled 70k on it. Anyone else have this issue just go away?

Knock on wood...but I haven't heard mine for a long time. A friend of mine insists he heard it about 6k ago, but I think he wasn't accustomed to how my truck sounds on a cold start without cats.
I've heard mine rattle 3x in the last 20k. I started changing my oil every 3k with Penz Platinum. I'm fairly confident that since I got tuned @ 40k'ish I have not had a rattle....
Don't strike me down EB gods...

Hopefully that's enough to initiate a repair.
I had mine done about 8 months ago. Phasers, timing chain, hole front end of motor.
So far all good!
Good luck!

I can definitely say the catch can has helped this issue in my truck. My truck very rarely rattles on startup now. I'm at 155k miles, rattle started at 88k miles. I pull a lot of water out of my catch can. Approx 1.5 liters per month. So why is this water building up and thinning the oil, causing it to leak down and rattle on startup? Short trips? You'd think that's be more of an issue in winter where engine doesn't get up to temp. Mine doesn't make a peep all winter, maybe the really cold air just keeps the oil thick enough. I dunno, more to think about.
Would an exhaust restriction(clogged cats) lead to more water in the oil? I can only assume if excessive exhaust back pressure causes pressure and contaminates to accumulate in the oil, water is a byproduct of combustion couldn't a restriction lead to more accumulation of water as well?

Well I called the dealership today. Told the service gal that my truck had made the noise a few times in the past and was curious if they had to verify the noise when it came in. She said they had too. I mentioned the TSB says customer has to hear it and she said they would still have to hear it.
Hum... Not sure if I need to go down there with the tsb and press the issue or what.

Vacuum Pump
There is a known issue with the vacuum pump. I have a letter from Ford that says they have extended the warranty on the vacuum pump. I can't say that is your problem but it is an issue so you might have the dealer check it out. Ford will replace it. I also have a 2011 but don't have the noise....yet.
