The TSB says:
"Does the customer state a ticking/tapping or rattle type noise occurs from the top front cover area of the engine upon initial cold start-up that lasts for 2-5 seconds after a cold soak of 6 or more hours?
a. Yes - proceed to (repairs)
.
I've never seen another TSB worded like this... It does not require the dealer to verify the condition.

I predict a shortage/backorder of parts for repairs. That's usually what happens when Ford finally figures out how to fix a major problem that has effected lots of vehicles.

I just called my dealer and asked them to look up this TSB. They said they will still need to verify the noise is present. Next time I hear it (probably tomorrow AM), it is going back to them and they can keep it until the hear it.

They told me they didn't hear mine when I first took it in. I said you either haven't started my truck at all, your mechanic is deaf, or one of you is a liar. (The truck made the noise every single morning for 3 straight months so I know they were yanking me around.) I reminded them that they were paying $30 per day to put me in a rental car and they were keeping the truck until they heard it. The noise magically showed up the next morning.

That won't work unless they have the code. Has anyone taken apart the timing chain to see if it is made with seals around the pins like motorcycle chains are or does it rely on the polish done to them during manufacture only ? If so the seal would keep out the gasoline and debris that would harm the chain over time and put it entirely on the lubricant allowing timing gear wear and chain noise while the gasoline dilution would point to even further excelerated wear of the teeth on the gears in the timing influenza.

Guess I will wait until it gets worse and hopefully a CEL comes on. I have 43k on it now but have the ESP warranty until 75k, so should be covered for a while.

I just got mine back yesterday and it runs way better now. My mileage went up by 3-4 mpg on my 10-12 mile drive to work this morning. I do the same drive every morning and its always between 12-13 mpg but today i got 16 mpg. I wrote last night that it sounded like my truck made the noise again but what I heard was very faint and could have been the hpfp. It didn't make the noise again this morning so I'm going to let it play out since I still have almost 40k miles on the Ford ESP. Plus I wouldn't mind another free oil change in the future if it comes back.

Hey gang,

Please consider scheduling an appointment with your dealership for this concern if you haven't already done so. Please shoot me a PM with your VIN; I'll see what I can do to help out.

Well I called tuesday looking for prices and whether or not Ford would help out since the timing chain was just replaced 5.5 months ago and noise didn't go away. No call back yet haha. Dealers want to deal with this about as much as a guy wants to go get a vasectomy. And I'm not even in warranty so they have been earning real money haha

I have a 2013 Ecoboost and experienced the 2-3 second rattle on cold start after truck sat all night.

I took it to the dealer and the say it is bad cam phasers and are going to replace.

24,000 miles - disappointing.

I did notice that my MPG went from 13 city to 10 MPG so I think there is a performance hit when you have this issue.

Not a fan of the Ecoboost. Never get better than 15 MPG even on highway. 13 MPG city. Like the power, but the MPG and reliability are real concerns. Marketing hype - you can't get these MPG numbers unless you drive 55-60 MPH on the highway. The Ecoboost is just a ploy to comply with government EPA numbers while fooling truck buyers that these MPG numbers are attainable.

The reality is the highway speeds here in Texas 70-80 MPH so you are always using the boost and sucking gas. In the city, more of the same. Always in boost.

I can deal with the gas economy disappointment but I can't deal with the lack of reliability.

I have watched quite a few of the videos of this problem, and the noise seems to last a good 3-4 seconds. Has the noise always lasted this long? Or did it first start-out as a shorter duration noise? I have the 3.7 and just started noticing a very similar noise at cold starts (needs to sit at least 12 hours), but a shorter duration. Mine may last a second or two. It's more of a loud "CLACK" at start-up. I have 26K miles and will be taking it in for diagnosis.
