What's the model year of your truck, trippen1999? Have you been to your dealer for diagnosis? Keep us posted.

I have a 2011 fx4 ecoboost 70000miles. Did not get dealer to look at it because it stopped making the noise for few months but now it has done it every cold startup for the last 6 days. Very distinct sound, you can heard timing chain clatter against the cover. I will record it on my phone tomorrow morning.

Let me know if you decide to go to the dealer, trippen1999; I'll be able to check out ways to help once you've received a diagnosis.

After it was repaired, when it was cold out mine would make the noise every time. Pointed it out to the dealer, but he wanted to wait until it could be repeated more easily. Now that it's warm out, I've only heard the noise a few times. I expect that come winter we'll be tearing into the motor a third time. What I'm saying is that you need to make sure the chain tensioner is also replaced with the chain. Don't let them talk you into cam phasers or anything else.

Yeah, if I have to have anything repaired in the timing assembly I will pay the extra for parts to change everything under the cover. Shouldn't be any additional cost for labor...just parts.phasers, chain, tensioner, all guides, secondary chains.

Crystal, thank you for the help. I am going to schedule an appointment sometime next week so I will be in touch with my info.

Cord. So you're telling me you are still hearing the noise after they replaced the phasers and the timing chain??? Ford didn't replace the tensioner? ?? I think the tensioner is the source of the problem.

I agree, I think the tensioner is the source of the problem. The noise appears to be oil pressure related. It takes longer in winter to build pressure and then take up the excess slack. The problem is why is the slack getting in there?

Secondary chains were good and tight on my engine and I didn't see any wear on the guides. Click on the links in my signature and you'll see the slack in my engine. PM me and we can talk dollars.

Two possibilities I think...The tensioner isn't building enough pressure to pull the chain slack as it wears...or it isn't staying pushed out, the ratcheting teeth aren't holding the tensioner out.
