Default 2011 EB problems

Before its even stated. YES, I have read all the EB theads regarding the condensation, and noise on start up. For the last 2 years now, this has kept my parents from pulling their travel trailer very far, if anywhere in fear of the truck breaking down on the side of the road.

We have a 2011 EB, with a little over 20k miles. Serviced every 3-4k miles by Ford. It has been in for reflashes, Intercooler TSB's, and now for Start up noise and blowing black smoke from the tail pipe, and occasionally blue smoke. Plugs have not been checked for gap, or even replaced either. Dealer says the Platinum plugs are good for 100k.

On start up(most consistently in the mornings), the truck's rpms surge from 500-900+ and the truck idles really rough, then will eventually smooth out. Then after taking off, it blows black smoke (looks like a diesel) out the tail pipe for a good period of time driving. The truck was taken in last week, dealer had for 2 days. Said it was fine as the truck was throwing no codes. Back at square one.

Also under acceleration I have watched the truck pouring out blue smoke from the tail pipe, not too sure on why, dealer has no idea either.

The truck will also make a loud rattling on start up. While it's not frequent enough to reproduce at anytime, it is still a concern. After reading the thread about the rattling, it's hard to determine if/when its going to be a big issue.

At this point we are unsure of just dumping the truck for a 2014, or riding it out until the truck itself lets go. The parents are very unhappy with this truck, especially with what you pay for one of these vehicles. We do have an extended warranty on the truck too. Maybe FordService can look into this aswell?

I will start from pull plugs check gap and also check oil level. Dealer reflash or have an aftermarket tuner?

Surprised dealer said fine, poring black smoke like diesel and blue smoke from gas engine isnt great.

Nope, no tuner. Completely stock. Father wants to trade it for a 6.2, but only if they cant get the truck straightened out.

I'd be happy to, 97madness. PM me your details, including your full name, best daytime phone number, VIN, current mileage, and servicing dealership, and I'll get to work.

A simple plug change with the plugs gapped at .030 would solve a good portion if not all your problems. Good luck with getting the dealer to do it.

Oh i agree with you. Being its my fathers truck (he doesnt do technology very well, so here i am) he insists on the dealer solving the problem. He feels he's paying for it, paid for the warranty (extended) the dealer should take care of him. If the EB was mine (i have a '13 5.0) i wouldve done it myself at this point, and if it didnt work then dealer would be figuring it out.

The 2011 SP-528 plugs were way over-gapped (.035-.042) and were replaced by SP-534 gapped at .030-.032 so even new EBs were having issues. It is a great engine with some misguided information. I tow and my spark plugs were garbage at 40,000 (confirmed by the tech). I bought a set of the SP-534 from Rock Auto, handed them to my dealer and told them to install them so I wouldn't have to listen to "Ford says". I now have 18,000 on the new plugs and it feels like they are starting to miss, so I will order another set and probably install them myself. It seems like towing (9500 lbs in my case) can really shorten the life of the plugs.
In summary, HAVE THE PLUGS CHANGED!!! This one simple thing may very well solve most of the issues and the dealer won't have to diagnose anything. I don't know why they are so hard headed about it as it has been proven to be a major source of problems since the beginning.
