2011 5.0 L F-150: from 3.31 to 3.73
#11
When weighing this option, keep in mind that the 6R80 transmission in the new F150's using a 3.31 gear is the same 1st gear total ratio as the older 4R75 running a 4.86 gear. Once you get out of 1st gear, there is no advantage to shorter rear gears.
IMO, that's a lot of cost and effort to go from what would've been a 4.86 (which most people would find more-than-adequate) to what would've been a 5.47 with the old tranny.

I'll be waiting patiently for your review as I've been seriously contemplating this upgrade on my 5.0 3.31 screw! IMO the people that say "its not worth the cost" or you "shouldn't feel that much difference" haven't lived with a 3.31 on this motor/trans combo. It's literally a dead dog off the line! Throw in the stock 20's on a 32" tire and well...grandmas in hondas are pulling lights on you.

You're in for a dramatic difference in off the line performance. I have the 3.55 and after installing the 5-Star tune it felt like I had a 5.14 compared to the 3.55 and lethargic stock tune. For you going from 3.31 to 3.73 AND a tune it's gonna be a tremendous difference.

I have 3.73's stock and without even giving it gas like 1750 rpm and below I pull away from everyone at the stop lights. I think mainly the 6speed, but a little because of the gears. Acceleration is really smooth and quick. Also with your wheels and tires it will make it feel way better.

The part that's a little harder to understand is what happens once you shift out of 1st. With the shorter rear gear (3.73), you'll have to shift out of 1st sooner, so you actually have a worse overall ratio when you're in 2nd and the 3.31 truck would still be in first. As you go through the gears, the acceleration advantage switches back and forth, depending on what gear which truck is in and the overall ratio at the time. So, it does affect the gear ratio in all gears, but it's not necessarily an advantage. Clear as mud?

I'm saying that with the new 6 speed tranny, the 3.31 gear gives you the same 1st gear overall ratio as the old 4 speed with a 4.86 gear, which isn't so bad.

Looking forward to the review on your new gears+tune!
