2011 5.0 L F-150: from 3.31 to 3.73
I just heard from the gear shop that my truck is ready to be picked up! They ordered generic 3.73 gears and turns out Ford changed the design of ring and pinion in 2011 trucks. So the gear set didn't fit. He originally quoted me $1,100 plus HST tax (13%) here in ON, Canada but then we had to order the $1,000 genuine Ford gearset from the local Ford dealer. I think I'll be looking at $1,100 plus $500 but I'm not sure yet. I started this thread to show the comparison between 3.31 (stock on my truck) and 3.73. I hope I'll feel a big improvement in acceleration and driver's satisfaction. I also bought the SCT tuner from 5 Star Tuning and was just waiting for the gear swap to be complete to load the tune. I'll report my findings here when I take my F-150 for a spin. I'm trucking now in my big rig in AZ trying to find a trucking load back home. The gear shop doing the swap is Pioneer Transmissions based out of Kitchener, ON CANADA.

When weighing this option, keep in mind that the 6R80 transmission in the new F150's using a 3.31 gear is the same 1st gear total ratio as the older 4R75 running a 4.86 gear. Once you get out of 1st gear, there is no advantage to shorter rear gears.
IMO, that's a lot of cost and effort to go from what would've been a 4.86 (which most people would find more-than-adequate) to what would've been a 5.47 with the old tranny.

dont forget that a crucial part of a gear install is breaking them in. Despite wanting to test them out in the parking lot, you should give them 300-500 miles to break in and an oil swap before running it hard

You're in for a dramatic difference in off the line performance. I have the 3.55 and after installing the 5-Star tune it felt like I had a 5.14 compared to the 3.55 and lethargic stock tune. For you going from 3.31 to 3.73 AND a tune it's gonna be a tremendous difference.

Not big on tranny gearing
Are you saying that the rear end ratio only affects first gear ,2 to 6 ratio stay the same no matter what rear end you have
Thanks for your help

No he is not saying that, your rear gear will effect the gear ratio to the tires through all gears.
I am not sure what he is saying, I think he was comparing the 4sp to the new 6spd, not sure what the price of milk in china has anything to do with this?
