What is exhaust drone?
Hey everyone! I am new to the F150 community and got my first truck. I am super impressed with it and I was looking to change the exhaust. From everything I am reading the Flowmaster Outlaw is crazy loud. From what I gather is the drone the noise you hear in the cabin?
I know with the 3.5eb I am not going to get the sound of a v8 (obviously) but would like to get a bit more growl than the stock. The only thing is I travel a lot (every weekend 3 - 8 hours) and don't want to go deaf in the process.
TIA

... Staying stock will result in no drone, costs nothing and will not lose any performance.
Good luck

I live in an area that borders the country, and I commute downtown to work... Around my home, I hear cars and trucks that have V8's, and exhaust that sounds awesome; around the city I hear V6's with "super cool catback exhausts" and they always sound real bad... Like, that feeling when you're watching someone do something really embarassing — it's always cringeworthy... That said, my brother-in-law has an EB (I have the 5.0), and his truck sounds OKAY as stock... but I would definitely not want to make it any louder...
The only exception that I will make to this rule, is that I used to have a german car with a sport V6 and exhaust. That sounded awesome, because it sounded like a sport wagon exhaust, which was appropriate for that car... If I heard that come from a truck though, I'd be confused and scared.

What most people call "drone" is the unwanted exhaust noise at freeway speeds. The way an exhaust sounds is as much about frequency and resonance as it is about flow.
A stock exhaust is designed to eliminate as much noise as possible. Aftermarket exhausts are designed to allow some of that noise to be heard.
Everyone who gets an exhaust wants it to rumble when peeling out from a stop light. When you get in 6th gear on the freeway doing 65, not so much. Anyway, it's all very subjective and personal preference gets involved a lot. What bothers one person sounds great to another.

I had the Flowmaster 40's with dual pipes installed with the resinators still installed and love the sound when taking off and still sounds great running down the highway with out being load inside the cabin. Search youtube for my video of the Flowmaster 40's dual pipe exhaust system below title.
