View Poll Results: What Tuner/Programmer do you use?
Just installed an Edge Evo 15051 on my 08 SCREW. Set it to #2 towing program and softned the shifts just a bit. Very impressed so far - hesitation is gone - shifts are nice and crisp. Truck has Magnaflow duals, but I have not installed an intake yet.
Do the tunes like 5Star negate the usefulness of the Tow/Haul mode since the shifting performance is changed by the tune?
Or is Tow/Haul also changed by the tune? How much is change in shifting behavior is left for Tow/Haul to accomplish?
With 5-Star (5.4L) there is a Performance/Tow and a Performance/Tow with O.D. Lockout. Basically it just adds more power and firms up the shifts/ changes the shift points a little. Haven't done any heavy towing, but from a performance angle it really wakes the truck up.

im likely not going to bother with custom tunes so i was wondering if anyone could tell me if the SCT SF3 or the Edge Evo has better canned tunes for performance and fuel economy. I'd run in level 2 on the edge, i dont know much about the SF3 though.
opinions?

The problem is you are looking for performance and fuel economy, which no canned tune can do well. A custom tune could tailor it to those needs, but a canned tune will be even more hit or miss. A Gryphon probably has the best canned tunes, but level 2 (towing) isn't going to be a good fit for the fuel economy on the highway. Likewise, the performance tune is only for 91+ octane.
The SF3's canned tunes are mediocre. Very few run them, but if you're new to tuning they may suffice. Might also want to look into Diablo's line of programmers as their canned tunes are pretty good, and can adjust for intakes later on, but their true custom ability lacks.
Sct is on top of the ford game.Get it,then if you choose to custom tune latter?
The tool re-calibrates many tables for this quickly and easily. This is not a 2 degree time flash or piggy back.theses boys have been at this game over fifteen years++ and are dedicated.Buy it use it.When done unlock it to sell. This and the money you save on gas will pay you back plus some.
Just whatever you do, don't fall for the $35 ebay special tuner that promises 50 horses and 30 MPG gains. lol
One of my friends bought one of those, and a throttle body spacer and brought them over for me to install and was super excited about it. I just shook my head and explained to him how his $35 tuner was a .25 cent resistor chip from Radio Shack in a neat little plastic box with cool sticker. And now the throttle body spacer is a good beer can holder in the garage.
There is a reason almost all the good tuners cost upwards of $300.

I don't have any experience with the sf3, but I have the Edge Evolution CS on my 08 F150 4x4 with the 5.4. I run it on level 2 all the time and get a noticeable increase in hp as well as average about 15.5 mpg combination in town and highway driving. Just don't buy a bulldog. I had one and sold it. Acceleration was actually worse with the bulldog and no noticeable gain in mpg (averaged around 14 mpg).
