Default RX Catchcan system results after install:

I wanted to start a thread that we can get those that have installed the RX system to post there before and after results as to shudder, misfire, water & gunk accumulation in the CAC, oil level rising (fuel and water accumulation in the crankcase, drain results, etc.

Have lots of people wanting to hear from those with the RX system installed and that it did all it advertised to do. There are a few like this example that do all they can to claim it does nothing:Ecoboost shudder/stall- loss of faith - Ford F150 Forum - Community of Ford Truck Fans so we want to get more actual user input so people can sort through the BS and have actual proof (Ford dealers installing them will be adding to this as well over time.

So contact anyone you know that has one as well so we can get a good view over time.

Thanks here are some customer experiences:

BHPETE - My main reason for me is like you say, to keep the air system clean, which it seems to be doing very well! I have had the stumbling issue more than once, but at that time, RX or any catch can for that matter wasn't on the radar? I went the aftermarket IC and tune route. Plus, moving to a dryer climate helps!
That being said, after obtaining a much better understanding of how this system works over the last few months, I have no doubts in what TB is claiming. I can say that my idle has smoothed out and mileage is coming up which would support exactly what is claimed!
Bottom line is this, for long term use the positives that this system provides outstrips any negatives.

BRUCESEARS - I drilled the hole in the CAC a long time ago, never had the condensation issue again after that. I put the can on to resolve the rising oil problem, which it has done in spades. Within 200 miles my oil level returned to normal and has stayed there ever since. Oil looks much better and no longer has that faint gas odor.

BLUEFLAMEFX4 - I'm still pulling a couple ounces out every Friday.

BRUCESEARS - I still get a little mixture (10-15 cc) out of the can about once a week even though temps are now pretty warm. In winter I could get as much as 50cc every 3 days. I suspect when full blown summer gets here it will collect very minimal amount. But man does it look nasty.

ECOMAX -


I drained this from mine today after 1000 miles of mostly city driving. Truck is new with only 1600 miles so no major changes in fuel economy that I could notice yet. Looks to be 6 or 7 oz in a 17oz bottle. Glad it is keeping this out of my engine...

MIKEMETX82 -





50 ml in 500 miles.
That's 1.691 oz. extrapolated to 16.91 oz. in 5000 miles(needs verification). It reeks of fuel. This explains my rising oil level and filthy cac. I have an oil sample prior to catch can so after the next change I'll send them both in for analysis.

ECOBOOST STS -


Truck has roughly 16,200 miles on it, about 1,000 of them with the catch can installed.

This is after ~2k on the Texas gulf coast.




The pic on the right is what was collected on the trip. The pic on the left is what I drained in the initial 2K of daily driving.

About 30 days & 2,000 miles worth of RX Catch Can blow-by...on Kansas roads, average temps in the 60-90s, mostly dry out. Still no repeat of the engine falling on it's face under acceleration. 2012 FX4 with 55,000 miles, can installed at about 53,000

MIKEMETZ82 -


500 miles. about 4 or 5 oz. Temps have been 55-75F. Perfect weather!

CNGECOBOOST -


This is after 500 km's. Temps range from 3 Deg C to 19 Deg C. Equal mix of city and highway driving.

AHDZNENZ - I'm getting that every day almost in Alberta, sure glad I got it!

CNGECOBOOST -





1000 km's (600 miles). Approx 225 ml of "soup". Approx 175 ml of liquid and the rest "Latte" foam. Pics taken right after draining. This does settle out. Mostly highway travels to work. Speeds around 110 kph. Temps from 3 - 15 C.

MIKE WOOD -







Here is what mine caught after 340 miles of driving this past weekend. The temps were 35-40F during the day, and 20-25F at night/earlier in the morning. I drove a nice mix of terrain that was a better route to make boost rather than my normal commute to and from work that rarely has me in the boost and is flat terrain. Plenty of hills and speeds ranging from 45-70 mph. Also on Sunday it was a 40 degree rain all day and I drove ~110 miles that day. Crazy all of this crap would otherwise be sucked into the engine and attempted to be burned off. That is a 24oz pickle jar for comparison



And here it is after sitting for 3 hours and settling out somewhat. I am thinking from the specific gravities and molecular properties that the bottom is mostly water, but what are we looking at in the middle and top? I'm guessing the middle is a frothy air-entrained water/oil mix, with some fuel possible. The top would likely be mostly oil/fuel mix. Can anyone confirm this?

CNGECOBOOST -


Next 1000 km drain interval. Approx 350 ml of "latte" up 125 ml from last drain. Temps ranged from -10C to +10C. Driving is my commute to work (all highway). Bottle on left is my last drain interval. I had to use a hair dryer to warm the can to get everything out as today's temp was -5C when I was draining after driving home from work. It does freeze up. Nothing drained when I initially opened the drain valve. Shielded the can with a rag so to keep the heat from the dryer on and around the can.

First post figured I'd start here
installed my monster can after 43000 Kms
on the install I didn't notice too much oil/contaminants on stock hoses
however after just over a tank of fuel and 700kms in temperatures ranging 0 c to -25 this is what I've caught
had to warm up with blowdrier and was very surprised by results

SKIDMARK -





Installed RX monster in a 2012 F-150 ecoboost drained for the first time after 300 miles around town. Drilled a 1/64 hole in CAC lower r/h side and changed the plugs to SP-534's and added Archoil to the oil and fuel.MPG is 19.2 combined truck has max tow package 3.73 gears

EGBERTNR - I did a trip over the holiday weekend from Southern ohio to Minnesota and back. 1800ish miles total. I emptied easily 8 Oz of gunk at each fuel fill. Temps range from 0° to 60° F. With rain..snow. .fog...truly amazing how much gunk is collected.

ROUSHRACING1 -


Bottle on the left is what my duel valve w/clean side separator has captured in Florida (temps above 65) in about 2300 miles.
Bottle on right was captured in northern Georgia(temps mostly below 45) in 900 miles.

Yes, my oil level slowly rose before I installed my can but has since stopped.

JASGRIMPC -


After about 3/4 of a tank

CNGECOBOOST -


Another 1000 kms (600 miles). About 300 ml. More oily foam , less water. Temps have been colder but still mixed above and below freezing. Pic is after 7 hours sitting in warm garage. Temp when can drained was -3 C. Can NOT frozen but still I heated with a hair to help drain faster.

GUNNER65 -


Last two days probably 60 miles all in town temps ranged from 27 - 50F




Combined with past two weeks 1 tank of gas. The good news is that the WOT shudder is almost non-existent now!

TEAMFOUR - Today was install day for my Wagner CAC. When I had installed my RX Catch Can at about 24k miles, I had emptied it of any liquid and residue. Today at 34k miles, I had absolutely no moisture in the old CAC. I empty the can every two weeks and get about 4 ounces of crap during the summer, and about 10 ounces during the winter.

VOZADAY - Well, think I need a CSS. Found my first signs of oil in the intake that I tapped into. Made it almost 5,000km without a drop but now I am having quite a bit.

KENSFX4 -


Today's collection.

WOOBOOST - I have been collecting the crap into a 32oz bottle. I probably have 20 - 25 oz of crap caught in 1000 miles. I drive short distances. Water content did not show up until winter.

Have any of you guys tried to freeze your samples to see how much water is really in that gunk?

Weird this thread showed up after that other one in the other sub forum? So do you have an answer why Ford has not installed these? Also doesn't the fact you have extra piping allowing these oil vapors and such to condense have anything to do with what you collect? I ask because there are high mileage guys not having problems without these "catch cans"

Great questions. For starters, Ford doesn't want to admit to engineering design flaws by implementing a solution as simple as a catch can system after the fact. Second it's a maintenance issue, the catch can system would have to be emptied automatically somehow for manufacturers to add them. They do not want to ask customers to add an extra step beyond the regular oil change procedure. Currently systems on the market require you to drain the can with each oil change and more frequently in some cases, depending on frequency of mileage added and the volume of the can. The EcoBoost requires the can to be emptied about every 5,000 miles. Ford dealers in both the US and Canada are adding our catch can system to customers vehicles as a solution and charging as much as 1k. Here is an image of a text message from one of our re-sellers in Canada, Rhineland Ford.



With regard to your other question our system is evacuating and collecting before the (CAC) intercooler. The PCV vapors are taken from the crankcase, the system uses vacuum to pull foul vapors from the crankcase and returns scrubbed vapors to the intake. There is no opportunity for our system to create the garbage collected if that's what you're insinuating. If you weren't I apologize, I may have misunderstood you. Remember the system uses vacuum to pull from the crankcase so the only thing coming into the can are foul vapors from the crankcase. Please let me know if I missed anything here and thanks for the dialogue, it was the point of the thread.

By the way every vehicle is different, some experience more issues than others. What can not be denied is that modern direct injection systems will always experience degradation over time. The fuel isn't cleaning the valves as it was in previous injection systems. Coking eventually leads to a loss in fuel economy and performance. Different climates, geography, maintenance schedules and mileage added will effect the severity. If you're one of the lucky ones or someone that does everything humanly possible to keep they're vehicle happy and healthy good for you. Knock on wood and keep up the good work. Catch cans not only help with some major issues they're about prevention and longevity. However if you aren't having issues, you don't NEED to consider installing a system.
