The only potential problem I can see is getting the trailer too close to the truck, and having the tailgate hit the tongue jack. F150's have a tall tailgate, which translates into long when in the down position. I actually had to do the opposite of what you're talking about. My ATV trailer has a rather forward mounted jack and would just barely clear the tailgate. The tongue weight is only about 250 lbs when loaded, so I made a 3" extended ball mount and drilled it in both standard and +3" locations. I use the original (short ) hole for the ski boat, which has a much heavier tongue, and fortunately a jack mounted further back. As long as the rear of the ball mount reaches the back of the receiver tube you have full engagement. How heavy a trailer are you going to be pulling ? I think moving the ball mount forward may be a solution in search of a problem.

I would say it sticks out about 75%.

I have a suggestion. Instead of taking subjective answers from people, which are going to vary from "it has to be all the way" in to "it's fine no matter how much sticks out, that's why they put a hole in it", pick up the phone and call Reese at 1-800-632-3290 and the factual answer. You can also email them at technicalservice@cequentgroup.com. I would email them, that ensures you get to a technical rep who gives you a factual answer, in writing.

Then, come on the forum and gives us the factual answer.

FYI, Cequent Group is the company that makes Reese, as well as Draw-Tite, Hidden Hitch, BullDog, and others.

Rick, I emailed them last night. I'll post back if they answer.

They will. They happen to be local to me and I contacted them about the hitch on my 1998 Ford Explorer which I wanted to remove, refinish, and then replace with new hardware. They were very responsive, ultimately sent me brand new hardware for free and I remounted the hitch after stopping the rust and repainting. Of course I then traded it in instead of keeping it, negating all that hard work...

The most important thing about the receivor hitch/ball mounts is the rating for what they can tow and the drop. Other than that they are standard. Below is a page that gives you a lot of different ways to select. (Rcvr Size, Drop, Towing Lbs).
