Default K & N cold air intakes

Is anyone using a K&N cold air intake? Are they worth the money? Do you notice a difference in performance? i put 3 in lift and 35's on and i am considering going to a cold air intake. i am running a 2006 f150 5.4.
Thanks.

Lightbulb

1) There SEVERAL posts/threads on the exact topic.

OEM, stock .....
  • already CAI.
    • air intake from LH (driver) wheel well behind the inner fender shield.
    • air box has a lid. MEANING: It's not a HAI (HotAirIntake) allowing heated engine bay air.
    • is made-of plastic. MEANING: Less heat-soak.
    • IAT reading is nearly same as an aftermarket. reference
    .
  • CFM exceeds engine requirements/needs. *UNLESS über engine modifications are done. e.g. cylinder head and/or cams.
    .
  • any increase in air flow comes at the expense of filtration.
    .
  • no contaminating the MAF sensor with oil. *Which reduces performance and MPG.
    .
  • Motorcraft, OEM air filters ...
    • meets|exceeds engine air intake CFM requirements.
      -reference-
    • good for 30,000+ miles (depending upon conditions).
    • ABSOLUTELY NO possibility of MAF sensor oil contamination.
    • dispose and replace maintenance.
    .
  • there are NO performance and/or MPG gains with aftermarket air intake systems. *If you're looking for performance and/or possible MPG gains, put your $$$$$ towards a tuner+tune(s).

I installed a K&N CAI in my 2012 5.0

Not sure I noticed any gains. Looks badass and sounds WAY more powerful, yes. But no real performance gains.

Now it is loud. Way louder than you would think it is, I can see myself getting annoyed by it in the future and going back to stock.

Hope that helps.

+1 to what they said.

If you do go with a new intake I'd suggest getting one that fully encloses the filter to cut down on noise as well as get a tune to make use of the added airflow.

Do a search and you'll find exactly what I'm going to say:

SAVE YOUR MONEY.

You can build a true CAI out of PVC pipe that sucks cold air from the wheel well as opposed to a so-called CAI that sucks air from the engine bay. Search for the Gotts mod on here and on Google Images.

Add that to the list of threads on here saying not to bother and save the cash...

For what it's worth, I dont believe the K&N intake sucks from the engine bay, just uses the same path to the wheel well that stock uses. It appears to press against the heat shield on the bottom of the hood to seal it off. Just designed this way to give more room for the massive filter and make it look cool when you pop the hood lol

The argument as to whether it does or does not pull cold air can (and has) go on for days. The fact is you can build your own and save $200-300 and be 100% sure it pulls cold air, not "believe" it does.

I'd be a fool to disagree with you there!

I installed the K&N series 63 in my truck (2014 Platinum 5.0) and just this weekend installed a K&N Blackhawk in my sons 2015 FX4 5.0 and on both gave them more throttle response and just felt and sounded better! As for making your own these kits were about $220 and took about 15 minutes to install! I am not sure how much time it will take to make your own but for the money, they are a great investment to me!
